Is it legal to put an Irish-format personalised number (ie: ABC 1234) plate on a UK-registered car?

Many people do it as they are generally a very cheap "private" plate that hides the age of an older car.

We bought one because my wife's middle initial is 'i'.

Thought about getting one for my username, but seems to have been taken!
