Bluetooth RSAP or HFP

Featured Replies

I was never particularly bothered about bluetooth until I bought a 59 plate octy with a 5N0 035 730 D RSAP only module. Bit of a pita rooting my then phone and downloading the RSAP software but the call quality was excellent and the signal never dropped.

I retrofitted a 7P6 035 730 K HFP only module to my 10 plate octy and while the call quality was nearly as good as my RSAP only module, the signal was never quite as good when the phone was in my pocket.

My new car has the all singing, all dancing 3C8 035 730 D RSAP and HFP module. My current phone does not support RSAP so I have it paired in HFP mode. Just like the 7P6 035 730 K module, the signal is not quite as good when the phone is in my pocket. As I still have the RSAP software on my play account, I am considering rooting my new phone and reinstalling the RSAP software and pairing in RSAP mode.

Is this straightforward, ie delete in HFP mode and repair in RSAP mode and all will work? If so, other than a better signal, does RSAP mode offer any additional function over HFP?

In fact it is as simple as changing connection on the maxidot once paired. Rsap allows premium functions like text readout and wifi hotspot which hfp doesn't.

Cheers Adam, looks like I'll be rooting my new phone then. Luckily it is only a £50 jobbie so I'm not bothered about invalidating the warranty!

Is it rSAP or HFP that is best with the additional aerial?

Or to put it another way, if the car doesn't have an external aerial, to use rsap one would need to be added. It plugs into the purple socket on the BT module.

Edit:

Something like this http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=281526939946&alt=web

Luckily I have the external aerial so should be OK!

What a waste of a morning. Rooted phone and downloaded RSAP software only to find that I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 mini i8200 rather than a Samsung Galaxy S3 mini i8190. Apparently the Samsung Galaxy S3 mini i8200 is not compatible whereas the Samsung Galaxy S3 mini i8190 is.

Anyone fancy a swap, my Samsung Galaxy S3 mini i8200 for your Samsung Galaxy S3 mini i8190????

Oh well, reversed the root now so at least phone warranty no longer voided!

I'll have you know that i8200N, i8200L, i8200Q also exist. All Samsung Galaxy SIII minis, all different devices. Yes, Samsung sucks.

The reason i8190 works whereas i8200 does not is that the former runs Android 4.1 and the latter runs Android 4.2.2. Google changed from the BlueZ stack to the Broadcom based BlueDroid in between.

Anyway, if you want to play, try installing another ROM and see if there is native support for rSAP or if the Bluetooth SIM Access Profile app works.

OK that will explain why the i8190 works with RSAP and the i8200 doesn't then!

Thanks for the explanation but less hassle to buy a cheap i8190 from ebay and sell my i8200 on.

Maybe, if you don't mind buying an older handset, probably with no warranty.

If I were you, I would opt for a newer phone that supports rSAP out of the box. See the list here.

Thanks for that link as I'm considering an rSAP phone and telephone module upgrade next.

Do it Karl, the call quality is so much better in rsap mode!

In my experience, finding the right rsap module is the easy part. Finding a phone which works out of the box with rsap within budget was the hard part.

I went down the route of buying a Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini which doesn't have rsap out of the box but is relatively easy to add. What I didn't realise was the Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini comes in differing guises and I bought the variant that rsap cannot be added to. I have since rectified this and am awaiting delivery of the right Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini this week which I shall root and add rsap.

Let me know if you need any help or support, it will be good to help you for a change!

New Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini GT-i8190 arrived this morning, rooted within an hour, RSAP software added, paired to the car and all premium functions working.

Call quality is excellent as too is the WiFi and text readout!

Old Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini GT-i8200 sold for same price I bought new Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini GT-i8190 for so no cost to change either!

After fitting a new latest model 3C8035730E Premium kit to my new columbus i wanted to be able to use all the features, due to me having a iPhone 6 & doing a lot of reading on the net it was discovered the only way was me selling up my beloved iPhone 6

I done a deal today for a brand new Samsung galaxy s6 & i done loads of reading about having to root the phone & not being able to get a clear answer if the s6 would work with my new bluetooth kit or not, i can confirm the samsung s6 works straight out of the box with rsap so all functions fully working without the need for rooting or downloading any extra apps. my s6 is fully updated running lollypop 5.0.2

Top result Murph!

Given the choice, I would much prefer an android phone with rsap than an iPhone with hfp. The call quality and extra features more than make up for it. And you didn't have to root, even better!!

Having used my kid's android tablets, I don't think I'll be switching to anything based on their OS anytime soon.

If only Apple would use rSAP as well...

What other alternatives are there? Windows based mobiles?

I don't believe any of the current WP8 devices have rSAP support and I've not seen anything suggesting it will be in WP10 either. Pretty long request thread here: https://windowsphone.uservoice.com/forums/101801-feature-suggestions/suggestions/3732891-i-need-rsap-on-wp8

I think you're limited to either older Nokia phones or select android phones if you want rSAP. Nokia were a big supporter so it somewhat sad to see it missing on their newer phones.

Depending what the tablets are, you might find a very different experience with various handsets as android allows a lot of customisation.

I agree. My kids have the cheapest of acer tablets and whatever version of Android they are on is not very good.

I have Android 4.1.2 on my phone which is okay for a cheap phone but no where near as good as an iPhone.

My Nexus 7 is currently running Android 5.1.1 which is very good.

As I have rooted my phone now I am soon going to flash a custom Android 5.1.1 ROM to see if it it as good as the Nexus!

They are cheapish Asus tablets, so you may be right in that I need to try a few higher quality devices and phones / phablets before making afinal decision to write off Android.
