Strange thing happened to me last night.

Featured Replies

on the way home from work last night the car felt really sluggish... i mean like half the power just wasnt there. the turbo would spool but was really quiet and the induction kit sounded noisier than normal (this may have been due to the lack of turbo noise though).

the idle was irratic as well, if i revved the engine the idle would drop to about 400rpm and the engine would almost stall (this wouldnt happen every time).

i got to my parents (about half way home) and shut the engine off and popped the bonnet to have a look and make sure everything was secure and no hoses had blown off. everything was fine so i got my mom to rev the engine a little so i could stick my head round the engine bay incase i could hear anything that wasnt normal. i couldnt hear anything that sounded out of place so put the engine cover back on and shut the bonnet.

the engine was probably off for about 15mins in total and when i came to carry on home everything was fine again. performace was returned, the turbo was spinning like a good'un and the car was back to normal.

i havent changed anything since putting the samco hoses and inlet manifold on before Trax in Septemeber and the car has been running perfectly.

it is due a service (the counter is on 100miles to go) and the ait filter is a little manky so i thought it might be related to the MAF needing a good clean, but i had read something about the N75 valve on another thread and wondered if this could be on its way out?

anyone had this happen to them? there were no engine lights on the dash when the power loss occurred.

Sounds like it could be throttle body related, why was the inlet manifold removed and was the TB cleaned?

sounds like what happened to mine.

i swapped the inlet for a polished one (purely cosmetic) and yes the TB was cleaned out.

do you think theres a chance air could be bleeding in through the gasket in the inlet side of the TB ?

Did you do a TB alignment after fitting?

no... i wouldnt have known this was needed but like i said it has been running sweet as a nut for a couple of months until last night, it was fine after the engine was turned off for a bit and was perfect this morning.

Boyced - what happened to yours and what fixed it ?

exactly the same, wouldn't boost over 5psi. slowed down and the car stalled. Haven;t done anything to fix it, its been fine since. There's a thread somewhere, think the TB gets some gunk built up in it.

i'll see how it goes until the cars had a service then cause i'll give the filter, MAF and TB a good clean then...

thanks for the replies... at least i know its not just me.

Eddy - whats this TB alignment then? is it something i can do?

I normally do the TBA using vagcom as you can see it working on screen. However if you don't have vagcom I believe it can be done by opeing the drivers door and while it's still open turn the ignition on but don't start the car. You should hear a slight 'wurring' noise from under the bonnet which is the throttle body cycling. Wait about 30secs and then start the car and it's done.

in that case yes we aligned the TB when we refitted everything as we had the injectors out and i did that very exercise to purge the fuel lines before starting the engine.

i think its pretty much what Boyced experienced... i blob of poop in the TB, i'll be giving it all a good clean after the 30k service so fingers crossed it'll be fine.

get a boost gauge.... will tell you exactly what the turbo is doing...wont fix the problem but you will deffo know if you have loss of boost pressure

was thinking about that last night... only thing is i dont know where to put it yet... i dont want it on the steering column a la Boyced and dont want an a pillar mount... did think about the trinket tray but i dont want 3 gauges so might have to make something for a single gauge to fit there on the right hand side so i can still put things in the tray on the left.

you know you do want one! Joel's got one too, I know I'm a trend setter

i like ours... its very clear easy to read but at the same time not to obtrusive
