Looking at buying a vrs mark 1

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I am new to this forum and looking at buying a skoda fabia 1.9 vrs on a 2006/07 plate for around £5500 with 60,000 miles on the clock.

When going to look at one is there anything I need to look out for?

Any help is much appreciated.

Many thanks,

Tom

Hi Tom - this topic has been covered time and time again.

Have a flick through the threads from the past few weeks for more in depth information when viewing a vRS.

In brief you are looking for :

1)Damp rear footwells, from the notorious leaking rear door seals.

2) Proof of service history and the use of the correct oil, to meet VW505.01 (iirc).

3) Signs of modification / abuse.

4) Excessive smoke from the exhaust when cold and also any excessive smoking when under load, i.e. Booting it in third/fourth gear.

Here is another few common faults :

* pinched from another thread, credit to MoggyTech*

Car is fairly reliable, with correct oil being the most important VW505.01 Spec.

Console bushes (revised part available or solid Cupra bushes)

Drop links

ARB bushes

Clutch and DMF

Water leaks from door carriers especially the rears

Camshaft wear and bucket tappets if wrong oil has been used (Must be PD oil)

PAS issues if battery not in good condition

Link fuses on top of battery can crack

Battery earth cable prone to corrosion

Alternator sense wire often breaks at the gearbox connection

Radiators tend to leak after 5 years (bottom corners).

Thanks so much for your help

Thanks so much for your help

You're very welcome

Using the search function - have a look into the common faults that are listed above, a couple of hours research will give you a lot of insight into the car you are buying, as well as giving you half an idea as to what is wrong if, God forbid, something happens during your ownership. Best of luck

You'll find Briskoda is one of the best car forums so if you do get problems, you will get help. I've owned 19 cars and the Fabia makes it to the top for a lot of points.
