There's only one BP garage local to me, and I don't pass it very often either. Think their standard fuels are higher than the local average to start with, from memory, never mind the Ultimate stuff

Personally, I'm more than happy with the performance of the standard Shell diesel (as I'm sure you've picked up already from this thread! ;))

Tesco

93.5

BP

Standard 95.9

Ultimate 99.9

I just paid 96.9 for Shell standard yesterday and that's already a penny cheaper than Tesco/Esso et al round here

Prices are creeping back up again

Steve

Makes you wonder though. We pay more in N.I. for gas, electricity and supermarket foods and the argument is that special pipes were installed for importing the gas which cost more and everything else including coal has to be imported by sea. Hell, Ikea won't even come here cos they reckon they would have to put up their prices.

Then why on average is our fuel 1 or 2p less than yours over there? Strange.

And these are NorthWest prices too - I'm 25 mins from some of the biggest oil refineries in the UK, if not Europe

Remain calm, count to 10, explain to myself that there's a perfectly good reason for this...

Wonder if I go direct to the refinery I can get it any cheaper - saves them transporting it anywhere!

Steve

Must be your driving mate, I can get 45-50 on 200 miles of motorways and average 40 on a very brisk 12 mile run to work down country roads

No, not really, It was at a constant speed without stopping. On the way back I dropped speed by 10 MPH and the MPG went up to average 53, so 10 MPH difference made 16 MPG increase.

That's the irony with the Fabia vRS, it's billed as a Hot Hatch which has super diesel economy, and it is economical if you don't actually drive it like a hot hatch, but not if you do. Sadly it barely beats my old Astra 2.0 petrol for economy when at speed, which kind of makes the whole concept pointless.

I've used all sorts' date=' but I haven't really nticed any difference. The Fabia vRS is not exactly impressive for fuel economy, I just averaged 36 MPG on a 200 mile motorway run and I wasn't going that fast either, was only me in the car and had no luggage.

In my other car, a Polo 1.4 TDi (3 cyl) I get at least 50 MPG at the same speed.[/quote']

Go to be concerned about that fuel economy figure unless your motorway journey was done at very high speeds. I am getting around 48mpg if I cruise at around 75-85mph. Higher speeds knock the consumption down a fair bit as air resistance squares with doubling speed IIRC. Did a short (25 miles) 85 to 95 dual carriageway / motorway journey last week and got down to 44. I was also going for it on the b roads from motorway to desination with plenty of overtakes. The best petrol car I had for motorway fuel consumption was the Chryslen Neon (old shape) which did 43mpg average when cruising at 90mph plus.

I am assuming you have checked your tyre pressures? Also worth getting the system checked out.

The Fabia so far is averaging 45 mpg for a mixture of driving instruction and my own driving. I dont spare it the whip when I am in it either. I honestly cannot think of another car that would get close to this economy / performance compromise at the price.

On the subject of fuels, tried some teso stuff in it this week, seems to be about the same as Esso stuff, reasonable economy. Also a taknful of BP standard diesel, again, nothing much to praise or criticise. Last night filled up with a tank ful of Shell standard diesel. Will try and track down a tankful of Diesel extra next time to get a back to back comparison. Also need to do a tankful of BP Ultimate. Should be about a week to report.

Next time your on a private road, like I was ;) , stay at the 85 to 95 MPH figure, after about 20 miles the average fuel figure is still in the low 40's, then suddenly starts to drop quite quickly to the mid 30's over the next 10 miles. I don't know if that's just the way the trip computer calcualtes the average but the shorter bursts at high speed show an average which is not sustained when monitored over long distances even if you stick rigidly to that speed, i.e. not flooring it to overtake.

If you want MPG stick to the speed limit then

Cheers  I spend most of my time in Southern Germany. Anyway, not many people buy a 'Hot Hatch' to drive like a granny. Now, as I've found, the MPG drops like a proverbial brick with speed and ends up not far from petrol car levels on long fast journeys, Now this drop off does not happen in a BMW 320d, or any Peugeot TD I've driven, they may be more expensive cars but then again the VAG PD engine is shared with some pretty expensive cars. This economy question is not something unique to me as many have questioned the vRS fuel economy on Briskoda. So, what was the point of sticking in a big heavy PD lump in a small car which stuffs up the handling, and then not gaining a counter advantage of fuel economy unless you drive at moderate speeds that just about any car can do. Is the vRS a hot hatch for people who drive slowly?

Edit: can't be bothered

The fuel consumption drops at high speeds because of the aerodynamics of the Hatch design. The Saloon and Estate are better is this respect.

If you want a fast slippery autobahn stormer get an Octavia or a VW Bora/Passat.

Well, the Fab has a full tank of Shell derv in it, so I'll see how that goes.

I'm still a bit 'eh' with my mpg. I was expecting more, but perhaps it is my driving style, perhaps not. The Fab is only ~2100 miles old, so I'm still holding out till it's got a few more miles under it's belt, but yeah. Hmm.

Also, would my mpg be better on a cold, early morning, rather than coming home from work when it's generally a bit warmer. I can get 45mpg going to work at 7am, but coming back sometimes struggle to get 41/42. Same driving style.

Prices are creeping back up again

Last week, diesel was 97.9p here in Andover. Filled up yesterday and it was down to 92.9p a litre. Then take off my 5p off a litre voucher :D

Used to find this on my old Fabia. I put it down to the fact that my journey involved a lot of hills and the way to work was predominantly downhill but the way back was predominantly uphill. Another thing to note is that in the winter fuel companies put some additives in to prevent the diesel waxing which will cause the economy to sink slightly too.....

Chris

Give or take, my journey is relatively similar in landscape both coming and going. Thing is, I, er, tend to get my groove on, as it were, on the way to work, when my mpg is a touch higher. On the way home, I'm usually not so much in a hurry, but receiver lesser mpg figures.

This is all according to the onboard computer, which, working it out manually, hasn't been too far off.

Recorded [by the onboard] 50.0 mpg for tonights journey. A whole 5mpg up from my 'best' with Tesco fuel. I didn't have a mad rush home, but I wasn't hanging around either. Is it the fuel? Is the onboard ****ing with my head?! :D

I'll see how the week pans out, mpg wise.

[And yes, there is other stuff in my life, ya cheeky gets! ;)]

You see! It's not just me :P

Nearly exactly the same as I had with the Tesco derv. V.similar to my results on Shell too - 50mpg normal smooth trips, 55 if you 'granny' it a bit more....

Steve

@RSE the cheep BP garage I always went to get my ulimate diesel in bristol is changing to a Tesco petrol station and shop

Has Shell Deisel Extra made it's way down south yet or does anyone know where a BP petrol station is with cheep fuel?

i stick any old **** in and it goes the same

after using ultimate for ages I dont want to go back to the rubbish as my car feels loads better from when I transferred to it

i stick any old **** in and it goes the same

Try some of the better stuff and I bet you notice the difference :D

Steve

everyone check out fifth gear next time its on... they are testing fuels e.g optimax, to see if there is a difference, and which is best!!!!!! I personally like to use the shell deisel in mine :)
