Quick poll. What fuels do you find suit the vRS best? (edit) the poll will accept multiple choices.

Having run a few tanks of diesel throught the Fabia vRS I think the Shell diesel plus suits it best. Just seems to run smoothly with good economy. Tried some Esso from a Tesco Extra the other day and the engine felt positively harsh. It would appear that PD diesel engine in the Fabia is as sensitive, if not more, than petrols to what they drink. Never noticed this before, but then the Fiesta was harsh with any fuel.

Guess what? The nearest shell station from here is 9 miles away :(

We have Supermarkets BP, Esso and Total in Chelmsford.

i've used tesco, sainsbury's, Morrisons, jet, Shell, BP, BP Ultimate, Esso, Asda.

They all seem the same, except Morrisons seems to be lower on power and BP Ultimate made it slightly quiter although no extra power.

Shell diesel plus seems less smoky.

Sainsbury's loads of smoke but more punchy

I use mainly Tesco fuel, but do prefer Shell. It does seem to run better with Shell. Only problem is finding a shell garage and where its not too expensive. Never tried BP ultimate as the price is rediculous near me.

Not sure for me, tried BP Ultimate and THINK its the best one, but the jury is still out.

BTW, I'm in Ongar, 6-7 miles from you

Only had the car just over a month and have used a couple of tankfuls, went to BP for normal diesel , then put in ultimate, and just put in tescos only because I had 5p off a lit and was too sensible to waste it. I think you really need to try one type of fuel for a month or two depending on mileage to get a true reflection of whats best. Because so far I have not noticed any differance

I cant say I have noticed any power advantages, but the BP expensive stuuf seems to make the car run more smoothly. Shell is the same, although doesnt seem as smooth, and Morrisons fuel makes the car sound harsh and makes it smoke like a train. I try and stick to Shell or BP normal diesel if I can. I was at Angelsey a bit ago and had to refuel at a prehistoric fuel station, "Power" I think it was. Can't say I noticed any adverse effects though. Apart from Morrison's fuel, the jury is out on differences between major brands.

Only ever used Shell in ours and they seem fine. Not overly smokey and good mpg.

Very rarely use anything other than Shell Diesel Extra.

I've filled with Tesco the last 2 weeks because of the 5p off. But the MPG has dropped by more than th 22.5 pence per gallon saving ( sorry too old for metric)

Back to Shell we go.

I've just run a full tank of normal BP as the garage didn't have the Ultimate - i got 330miles from full to light coming on, this was mainly to + from work (about 8 miles each way) - the petrol cars i've had before got around this figure, i expected a lot more from a diesel

Yep I agree - can't better 50mpg on a gentle run now. With Shell (which I voted for above) that can hit 55-58. This is trying to be really smooth and get max MPG, so these aren't exactly real-world figures, but it is noticeable.

I put a full tank in at Tesco, with the 5p off voucher, and I've also noticed that it doesn't pull quite as smoothly as before. It's a fairly accurate test, as I've been using Shell almost continually since I bought the car; there's also the advantage that the Shell is the cheapest station in the area.

So it's another move back to Shell when I run this tank dry :)

Steve

I've also used shells finest from Day One. Infact i have only ever used shell over the past few years with my scoob and CTR.

Have tried other fuels on the odd occassion and could certainely tell the difference on performance with the petrol cars i have had. I would imagine it would be the same for diesels. May have to put to the test.

As for MPG i cant complain, getting on average 51-53mpg most days and thats a mixture of A,B and Motorway.

Paul

Whatever's closer and cheapest

I know mine isn't a vRS but I have the same engine so..... :eviltongu

I used Texaco diesel for a while 'cos it were cheap but to be honest it is CR@P!

I have reverted back to Shell diesel extra and BP diesel and I have noticed a considerable impovement in performance over the old rubbish I used.

I've just filled up with Shell Extra for the first time. I'll see what difference it makes. I have been using Jet Diesel (local filling station) so we shall see. Cant get BP as there is no station near

Just a quick question - I never seem to have to make a decision between diesel at my local Shell, unlike the choice between regular and super unleaded. So does that mean that my 'normal' Shell diesel is this Shell Diesel Plus/Extra (whatever it's called!)

Steve

I always try to put shell in the car, if not i end up going to Sainsburys. To be honest i've never really notice any real difference, maybe that's just me. Never tried BP Ultimate because of the price.

Have just got an average of 59 MPG across a tank of Shell, (using my calculations, not the trip computer) had to drive very painfully in order to do so though :(

I use the car for driving instruction and teach in my patch which is Brentwood, Ongar, Chelmsford and Billericay. Mines the red AV55 with Karens driving school board. Was in Ongar twice today and will be there agian tomorrow. Give us a wave!

Chris

PS have to take the board off the top if going down the A414 between appointments, overtaking might knock it off the top ;)

I tend to use the pump with 'Diesel' written on it. no probs so far

Good fun isn't it. Its almost like a "suicide lane" down the middle!:rofl:

I'm doing my degree on day release at APU...

Was using Asda diesel but I have just filled up Shell for the first time and the mpg is better by approx. 3 mpg. I'm sure my driving style hasn't changed!!??

You might be thinking of the A130 Essex Regiment Way, or as it is known byt the local ambulance service "suicide alley". Always careful down there. Mind you, the A414 has claimed it's share. :RIP:

I'll probably see you in APU sometime. We (driving instructors) often wander down to the refectory in the new building when the learners are out on test. :pie:

Does not surprise me. In the Fiesta, I used to get 48-52mpg average with Most diesels, but sainsburys in particular used to give 44-47mpg. I am on my second tankful of Shell today and it seems to be running fuel consumption just a little better than the Esso previously run (around 2 mpg improvement). What it does do is run smoother and quieter. I am guessing that the Sainsburys stuff would give similar results in the Fabia. I might try a tankful next week to see how it goes. Currently seeing around 390 - 420 miles between fill ups with instruction and "fun" driving.

I dont know too much about diesel. With petrol, you used get hot and cool fuels. The hot fuels are made from the by products of lubricant manufacture (derived from lubricant crude) and the cool fuels are made from crude best suited to fuel manufacture. Genral difference was the carbon / hydrogen ratio. Cooler fuels were higher in hydrogen, lower in carbon. If your engine could utilise it, hot fuels gave more power, particuarly if running proper mixture (as opposed to stoichiometric), but ran harsher as well. Chamber temps where higher with the hot fuels.

Stuff seems to be a bit odd these days tough. The Omega runs fastest and most fuel efficient on Esso Supreme or BP Ultimate. Smoother to, however, in that car, Shell Optimax robbed the engine of loads of power and around 4 mpg.

Is it possible that diesel fuel, like natural gas, has differing calorific values (a difference in energy content) from brand to brand.

Chris

PS Poor Omega has not been out since I got the Fabia two weeks ago.
