You see! It's not just me :P

Nearly exactly the same as I had with the Tesco derv. V.similar to my results on Shell too - 50mpg normal smooth trips' date=' 55 if you 'granny' it a bit more....

Alas, a spirited drive home tonight notched a 41.4 on the onboard. I suspect I was slightly guilty of grannying it to get my 50.0. Still, 50 can be done. Just. I doubt I'd be able to get any higher. :(

[41.4 was put down to running late for a golf lesson. Naughty me.]

Might stick with the Shell stuff for a littel while longer - see what it does. S'about the same as Tesco derv anyway, and the Shell place is nearer! :D

Hi

Did you check out this link?

http://www.shell.com/home/uk-en/html/iwgen/shell_for_motorists/service_stations/app_station_finder.html

There seems to be a few more than round here. I am currently burning my way through a tank of BP Ultimate which is definately smoother running and subjectively a little quicker at the top end than the tesco / std shell / esso / std BP stuff. I will run a tank of Shell Extra through it next to get a back to back comparison.

Hi

I have now covered around 4200 miles and tried a variety of fuels through the Fabia vRS. I have tried the following:

BP standard

BP Ultimate

Esso Energy

Shell standard

Shell Extra

Tescos

I found the BP standard, Esso Energy, Shell standard and Tesco fuel to all feel similar. I had one batch of Esso from a Tesco Extra store that ran very noticably more harshly than the rest. Subjectively, if I had to choose one from this bunch, it would e the Esso, as it seemed to give slightly better performance than the others, but very marginally.

Then there is Shell Extra and BP Ultimate. On Shell Extra the engine seems noticably less harsh than with the standard fuels. Performance is good and economy a little better than the others (maybe 2MPG over 2 tankfulls, but useage could account for some or all of that). Then there is the BP Ultimate. Subjectively the car runs just slightly more smoothly than with the Shell Extra, the diesel thrum being least noticable of all the fuels. Performance seems just a little stronger than from the other fuels and the engine seems to rev out better. Economy wise, it would seem to be quite a bit better than the others at maybe 4mpg up on the standard fuels. Again, this over only one tankful and

useage may have accounted for this result. I ran the BP Ultimate and Shell Extra back to back and the differences in the way the engine feels are minimal if anything at all. I will continue to monitor the BP Ultimate and Shell Extra. At the moment, the 26p / gallon premium for the Ultimate means that it will have to give me another 3mpg to make it worth buying in economy terms.

I drove to Manchester Airport 2 weeks ago and the NEC bike show last Sunday, both 300 miles plus and I did not need to fill up again on the return which is a first for any of the cars I have owned. The computer said 49 mpg after the trip to Birmingham with plenty of 90 mph where possible, I have never seen less than 40 even on my short trip to work using any diesel, so I think each engine is different in the vRS if some people think the economy is crap! I am spending half the money on fuel that I used to since buying the Skoda, That is all i need to know.

The fuel economy is great on the skoda. I use tesco cause of the clubcard points. My old fiat went 270 miles on 30 quid. The fabia VRS gets at least 400 miles even with some spirited driving. Top notch

fifth gear tonight, tested unleaded fuels.. shell was best .. an extra 35lbs/f torque over supermarket standard in an imprezza.... thats gotta be woth it! big hp hike too!

I watched fifth gear also last night but a slight problem I can't remember if they sorted it was that which ever was the last fuel would of had the tank full from the previous cleaning fuel

and they always say you need a few tanks to get the full effect

otherwise was interesting to watch the results

Fabia vrs being very similar to a Impreza...

FWIW, I've just tallied up my first tank of non-Tesco [in this case] Shell diesel. 41.2mpg. Second worst mpg since I bought it.

Survey says....

:(

Fact is, I'm probably going a lot quicker than when I first got it. Tank of Tesco this week running at the same pace I've been at the last 7 days. We'll see then.

Chris[/quote']A nice summary. When I tried BP Ultimate in my old TDI I found it just about broke even i.e. the extra mpg just paid for the price premium. The advantages were a smoother engine and longer range on a tankfull.

Next time your on a private road, like I was ;) , stay at the 85 to 95 MPH figure, after about 20 miles the average fuel figure is still in the low 40's, then suddenly starts to drop quite quickly to the mid 30's over the next 10 miles. I don't know if that's just the way the trip computer calcualtes the average but the shorter bursts at high speed show an average which is not sustained when monitored over long distances even if you stick rigidly to that speed, i.e. not flooring it to overtake.

In the interests of science, I had a go at this today. I set the cruise on an indicated 90mph (87 according to the GPS), reset the trip 1 and logged the average and kept an eye on the instant reading. The car clocked an average of 47.1mpg over 42 miles. The instantaneous reading stayed pretty constant, with no real variation or noticable drop, just varied with the gradients.

All in all the little vrs did well. Took it to Dorset and back for an audit. Monday night, went down A12/M25/M3/M27/A whatever. Quick but not blistering drive with burst up to 100 but generally 75 to 85 averaged 54.4mpg. Coming back, including "test cruising" did 52.6mpg. loads of traffic waiting at the Dartford tunnel.

This is the first small car I have ever driven that left me feeling fresh and relaxed after a long drive. Love it more every day.

Ive just finished a tank of Shell (having read this thread and others)and concluded that there is no difference from the usual diesel I fill up with (JET). As for 'Ultimax', there is no BP station near. I would'nt bother anyway. Its probably a 'placebo' effect

For a long time I used to fill up at Jet, which was both local and cheap. Then one day I broke the boycott and went into Esso. The car ran like a rocket in comparison - made the Jet stuff feel like crud. Then I used Shell Diesel Extra and it was even better. Quieter, too.

Then I used Shell Diesel Extra and it was even better. Quieter, too.

That's interesting ... I wonder if it's being highlighted by the remap cos I noticed bugger all difference when I ran a few tankfuls of expensive branded diesel through it

In fact the only fuel which made a difference was Tesco Global Diesel (5% biodiesel) which made the car run very smoothly, even when it was cold ... just a shame they put the price up! :(

Chris

I wonder. It is definately noticable though - filled a very nearly empty tank of Jet diesel with some Shell Diesel Extra and five minutes down the road it got really lively.

My last car didn't run any different on 95 or 98 RON. Maybe it's a performance car thing :hat:

Not had any experience with Jet to comment, but I didn't notice any difference between the "cr@p" supermarket fuel I fed it on and Shell Diesel Extra or BP Ultimate, but I do hear a lot of people slating Jet. Would be interested to see what effect other fuels have on it :D

Just done a back to back test of Ultimate / Extra / Extra / Ultimate. The difference is not huge, but it definately seems to prefer the Ultimate. Smoother and revs out a little freer. I will be doing a coule more tanks to assess the average fuel consumption.
