electric power supply

Featured Replies

Hi , Help please as when it comes to car electrics I get totally lost and confused. I want to run a twin usb  , one to charge my mobile, usb port fitted in centre blank on dash , and the other usb to run my sat. nav .  I am fitting in the top storage on the dash so that it flips up( I hope) also fitting a windscreen camera. I would like to run these only when the ignition is on, My questions are where do I take the supply from, and can I run all from the same place and what amperage fuse do I use. componants already purchased.  Any  help would be appreciated.

There should be empty sockets in your fusebox, buy some fuse taps from eBay and use them in the sockets. Just use a multimeter or bulb to test if they are ignition or permanent lives.I had both so you may have the same.

Also make sure your usb components have a little box which steps the voltage down from 12v to 5v.

If you are feeling a little more adventurous drop the lower steering trim and access the back of the fuse box and insert a repair wire with terminal for the positive to keep it tidier. There is a grounding point at the top right of the dash fuse box for the negative.

A 5amp fuse should be sufficient.

Are your two usbs a double on the same circuit? If so a single fuse can cover both.

What the above posters have said. Use decent quality cable (I reccomend 8amp) though and ensure all your connections are good and sealed.
