Help! Gearbox stuck in 3rd gear

Featured Replies

Hoping someone could shed a bit of light on what my problem could be. Basically I was driving steady went to change from 3rd to 4th and there was nothing there. The car stayed in 3rd gear and the gearstick felt slack. I pulled over and tried to get the car into neutral but I could tell the gearstick was doing nothing. I checked the gear linkages were moving on the top of the gearbox when I moved the gearstick (with the help of my daughter) and all was fine. I just left the gearstick in the neutral position and managed to drive home with it in 3rd. ( clutch working as it should )

Is this sounding like the gearbox is broken, or is there something else it could be?

I've had a look at that but it doesn't sound the same as my problem. Mine won't disengage from 3rd at all. The gearstick and selectors on the box look to be working as they should. Clutch also works, just stuck in 3rd :-(

Is it just 1st and 2nd you're missing? Can you get it into reverse?

Could be the selector fork that has failed, its common on these 02M boxes unfortunately.

I can't change any gear. It's stuck in 3rd. I was getting clutch creep and hard to get it 1st and reverse for a while before this has happened. Everything I've read on the Internet point toward a failed selector fork. Suppose I'll find out tomorrow :-(

Aren't there any engine or gearbox mounts that might have failed ? I've seen a situation with a different car that was able to engage only reverse due to a faulty gearbox mount. It was an easy fix though.

Well I've had the car in my local indi garage who suspects selector fork at fault. He sends the box off to a specialist who have quoted me £300-400 + vat depending on what needs doing for the repair. Now I'm watching a gearbox on eBay not too far from me that's been taken off a fabia vrs blt engine with 92000 on it and was in perfect working order when removed. It's not going for a lot of money and is looking considerably cheaper than the repair costs on mine. Do I buy this box or spend a load more on getting mine repaired? What's your thoughts?

What mileage is your car?

I had the same problem and ended up paying and getting my original box repaired. I had the new uprated selector forks put in mine.

If you recon your box you know its history and its got a clean bill of health. The selector fork could break happen to the replacement box tomorrow...

You’ll get a cheaper price going direct to a gearbox specialist yourself, although that price sounds reasonable mine was £360 including putting the newer forks in.

I hear what your saying. I'm just trying to weigh up the cost over the risk. :-/

Sounding diff to mine, but look again, get someone to change gear while you watch the nut/spine inside the arm. the arm might be moving but if the splines are worn to nothing they won't actually be moving the selector forks.

I think the gears are moving in the box as it locks up when you put it in any gear except 4th (which the gearbox specialist said was strange as it should lock up in all gears) :-/ (tests done at the garage not by me)

This is why I've been given a vague price as he won't know what's going on till it's opened up.

ok it looks like im going to buy the second hand box as its working out a way cheaper option. im not very clued up when it comes to things like this so im just checking on here with you fine people that this box will fit my car before I buy it. its from a fabia vrs with a BLT engine gearbox code HDS 19125P02. now all I can tell you about mine is that its a 55 plate 2006, fabia vrs ASZ. I don't know the code on the box of mine as its in the garage.

Gear selector fork for sure. I had one go on my Ibiza FR when it had like 30k on the clock and limped it back home in 3rd.

2nd time it went I was changing into 4th down at Santa Pod ha. I drove it home too.

I took it down to Jabbasport who sent it off and stripped the box sorted it and accidentally put a A.T.B. differential in at the same time! Annoying around two month earlier I fitted a Helix SMF and organic clutch! Good luck mate.

Well I won the gearbox I had my eye on for the massive sum of £30.....so the risk just got a little better over the cost to fix mine. Hopefully this and a new Sachs clutch and dmf will see out the life of the car. Only time will tell but needles to say I'm happy with the outcome so far :-)
