Help Dizzy cap setup

Featured Replies

Hi, I was just wondering if anyone can help, I am rebuilding a skoda pickup,

It's a 1997 1.3 carb engine. And I have a new dizzy cap, but I am struggling to set it up right,

Ie leads into the correct plugs, I was hoping some may have a picture of the correct order,

Any help and advice would be very grateful,

Regards

Chris

Forget photos of set up,as over the yeas I've found it's not conclusive .( I come from the era of one coil, one dizzy cap , points etc). You need to find when pistons 1 is . highest in the bores . Good approximation is to set timing mark on crankshaft pulley to line up with timing mark. Crankshaft pulley will be fanbelt end of engine .Failing finding the timing marks, it’s down to using the piston position to show when

Pistons are highest in bores.

You will need a length of e.g wooden dowel ,or a long handled screwdriver and some way of marking the lead piston numbers on leads ( for the next time).

For safety , do the following ON LEVEL GROUND ONLY.

  1. Remove All Four Spark Plugs.
  2. Put vehicle in highest available gear, and move vehicle forward ( it should pull quite easily) ,till piston 1 ( crankshaft end of engine) reaches highest point.( As piston moves up –it will push the dowel /screwdriver up )
  3. Pull forward till the rockers on No1 cylinder show closed, whilst noting the direction of rotation of the rotor arm (shoulf be clockwise, but never assume) Double check with dowel/screwdriver that piston is at highest point
  4. Note position of rotor arm. It will be pointing to no1 . Fit lead and mark.
  5. From 3, follow direction of travel of rotor arm to next contact which will be cyl 3, then 4 and 2.

Refit rocker cover, spark plugs , fit leads to plugs. Start and test.

I used to have daughter's ex come in a panic. He'd taken all the leads off and played around ,putting leads back where he thought they should be. Car no run. I did this once and I was a car expert to him . it's not rocket science. i worked for a large firm with it's own garage, and the bloke in charge was only too wiling to share his expertise.

Chris,
Forget about 'solution' above. Here is the photo you need. Keep us posted. You may have one of very few 1.3 pickup Felicias in UK. Please give us details in this topic.

Ricardo - with ALL due respect- i do not trust a photo of how it was , for a lot of reasons.

I've given my way ,which I've ALWAYS works. If your photo gets him working, then great, but if NOT, I've suggested a way of doing it from BASIC PRINCIPLES. Could be that dozzie is/has been moved. MY METHOD allows for this .

The original poster asked exactly this: how to connect in the correct order the spark plug wires from distributor to spark plugs. If you don't trust the photo, it is your problem.

I was polite enough to not criticize step by step your methods of doing 'mechanics' on Skoda Felicia. I realized you have strong convictions coming from the old school whose motto is "what do those fools know? let ME tell you how to fix a car" and it would be a waste of time to list all your mistakes. Better leave it that way and agree to disagree. One single advice though: generic methods of doing mechanics don't apply to every type of car, Felicia included. People need specific solutions, otherwise you get them in trouble and they might end up losing time and money.
