Elegance 60ps - 'pinking' noise when engine is under load

Featured Replies

Here's another thing that my dealer says is 'normal operation'.  Since new, whenever the car is under any sort of load - even gentle acceleration or low-gradient hill - I get what I can best describe as a 'pinking' noise....sounds more like a diesel!  I notice it most in the higher gears, and it is most noticeable in 5th [at speeds well within the 5th recommended range as indicated below the speedo and up to maybe 3000rpm].  As soon as I ease the pressure off the accelerator to reduce the load on the engine, the noise disappears.  As I said, my dealer told me that this was normal and was a characteristic of the 3-cylinder engine, but I can't recall noticing it during my test drive of the dealer's demo car before I bought mine.  The car has 2500 miles on the clock and is driven very gently.

Comments anyone?

Sounds like my car to be honest, nothing to worry about.

No pinking for me in 11000 miles under all conditions with cheapest fuel available. The electronics should alter to suit your driving style.Get a second opinion from a better dealer.

I've driven 3 Citigo and all of them gives the "pinking" noise you describe. It constantly adjust ignition advance (as modern engines do) so nothing to worry about. Vcds shows there is knocking sensors in the engine.

Mine done it too. Nothing to worry about.

It should be very easy for your dealer to take you out for a quick spin in their demonstrator so you can see if the noise is there or not.

Skoda Assist mechanic said that noise could be the modified manifold heat shield vibrating and is fixable, mine sounds the same

If you're referring to the noise that sounds a bit like blowing a raspberry into an empty drinks can, then yes that's normal -- every CitiGo, Up! or Mii I've driven does it.

Mine too. noticeably less on my recent trial of super unleaded, which is one of the upsells of super, so unsuprising.

I quite like that noise!

Took mine to the nearest Skoda dealer to fix the modified exhaust heat shield and was told the mechanic has moved it around and it "should be ok" I said what if it's still making the noise seeing as it wasn't changed and the mechanic had told me they've had to change loads and the Up one's is reply was "drive it  high through the gears so ie.take it to 45 in 4th 55 in 5th and you shouldn't  hear it".Well it's worse than ever now and going back on the 20th 9am.Watch this space
