what could be the cause of difficulty in selecting 1st & 2nd gear ?

This is just when the engine is running and gets warm . And only first and somtimes 2nd gear.

Have you tried adjusting the linkage?

 

 

This fixed my 1st selection problem (although 2nd was fine).

 

Changing the gearbox oil may help also...

Cheers I think mine is hydraulic

On the possibly related theme then, Octys also have hydraulic clutches, and also sometimes need gear linkage adjustment.
