Total ignition failure

Featured Replies

yesterday while sat in a traffic queue the engine cut out as if I stalled or ran out of fuel, but there was no lights on the dash the radio was still on and my windows worked but the air con turned off and all needles on the clocks dropped to zero

I tried to restart the engine and there was nothing, no lights on the dash, no turn over. Very worrying at the time!

I called RAC out and checked the battery voltage was ok, checked the fuses even checked the timing belt was still there! eventually RAC man turned up, checked everything I had already checked and then started scratching his head. Tried connecting to the obdc but no ignition no comms it seemed.

So he towed me to a Vag specialist in Bristol and told me he suspected the fault was in the instrumental cluster which would need repairing or replacing. Today the garage called me to say they've actually traced the fault back to a Relay, part is ordered and car should be ready this afternoon with a £250 bill.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Does anyone know what relay they are referring to?

and should this be the cause, is this a sign of things to come?

2008 Octavia vrs 2.0d 105k

Cheers

turned out to be just a faulty relay!

£11+vat for part

£197+vat for labour

was back on the road the next afternoon

Wow £200 labour for a £11 part  I guess most of that was diagnostic work to find the issue. Bet you are glad it is all fixed though.

yeah its a lot I know, my mate who runs his own small local garage said I got ripped but I asked if he thought he would have been able to locate the fault and he said probably not

Some people you pay for knowledge and not time.

Does your itemised bill include the name of the relay? Could be useful to post in the thread to help future readers with a similar problem.

Glad you got it fixed!
