Sparkplugs, VCDS coding, heated windscreen

Featured Replies

Hi fellas,

1. I've done about 10k miles with my old sparkplugs (in about 20 months) and I'm thinking about replacing them. I'm not doing it for actual issues, but more than for prevention (my imaginary friend tells me that sometimes the engine has to crank once or twice to fire up and it revs a bit slower than usual). I will be doing this along with an air and fuel filters change. Has anyone used OEM sparkplugs ? How are they ? It's an old ATZ engine, with 8 valves and 68-ish horses so it wouldn't make any difference, but I just like it to be as original as possible and as far as I know, OEM parts are better than the aftermarket ones.

2. I've been playing for a long time with VCDS and I've found that the Central Electrics has an option for heated windshield timer (not for the rear one !!). Maybe the cars for the northern Europe had one? Is there a way to retrofit it on ours ? I've found this website and this one, but it doesn't say anything about regular models, only about the racing ones.

3. There are some other settings, such as comfort blinkers, horn sounds when locking and unlocking the car, motorway blinkers (pull the lever once and they should blink for a couple of times) and so on. For some reasons, I cannot activate them, it says the function is not available. Should I replace my comfort unit in order to have this function? If I will replace it, which other modules will have to be recoded in order to work properly with it and which are the risks to damage anything if the car wasn't desgned to have this thing ?

Do the petrol engines have the option to activate the fuel pump when the driver's door is opened ? It didn't let me activate that function either, when I tried to save the coding, it was ok, but when checked, it got back to the old one.

I hope I didn't annoy you ... a lot ... with this long post.

2.

I noticed this and thought how great it would be.

3.

I think it's because you need a registered version of vcds/lite?

2. Already started to save some money for the upgrade. I would really like to have a few replies from somebody who already had fitted one, OEM or aftermarket.

3. I am using VCDS beta 912. It is telling me that updates are available and stuff, never thought about trying a different version though.

Where do you live? Perhaps someone could activate for you?

I've already texted a friend of mine. Thank you for the tip!

Offtopic:

Dang, it was a hot day today. I'm used to driving along with all 4 windows down, but this time I had to drive my dad with a few friends of his they demanded AC (arhhgg). It felt so slow with the it on, I thought it was a different car. I got used to it pretty quick..I'm driving it for the past 2 years .. but still ... it was too slow. Maybe it is just me ...

Ontopic:

Am I doing anything wrong by activating the fuel pump relay function when the driver's door is opened ? Is there anything I might mess up?  :dull:

You may find that your car lacks a relay needed for the priming on door opening. Normal fuel pump relay needs ignition to be switched on, so an extra 'fuel feed' relay connected to permanent 12v and controlled independently of the ignition is needed for the function your looking to implement. I think!

There are lots of things in VCDS that cannot be activated due to the necessary hardware missing from the car.... just because VCDS has the option to enable something doesn’t mean it will take the coding!

It makes perfect sense! This was my initial thought as well. Basically, I was asking which module I' have to replace in order to be able to activate that functions (windscreen tear wiping, motorway comfort blinkers, car locking sounds - horn, etc.).

I was thinking about 'upgrading' the comfort unit, if possible, but those settings have been found under Central Electrics if I'm not wrong so I am no longer sure where should I start digging. Is module 09 controled by the ECU itself?
