6 speed gearbox - how smooth?

Featured Replies

Hi

I've got a new Octavia 1.4 TSI with the standard 6 speed gearbox. How smooth should the gearbox feel - it seems quite notchy and stiff to me when changing gear, and occasionally baulks into 1st or reverse. I appreciate the car's new (250 miles so far) so will loosen up, but I don't remember my previous new Fabia feeling stiff like this.

Is this a naturally notchy gearbox or should I be monitoring it?  At the moment it feels a bit like a previous Mondeo did when a garage put the wrong gearbox oil in after a gearbox swap.

Thanks.

One of the better gearchanges ive experienced in a car for some years. Certainly on the 2.0 TDI 150 I have its a bit graunchy on the 1st to 2nd gear change when cold but improves a bit once up to temp but they are all mostly like that. I cant say I've noticed much issue going into reverse.

On my 1.4 TSI (now on ~15,000 miles) 1st to 2nd doesn't seem quite as smooth as the 170,000 mile Mk1 Octavia that it replaced.  Very occasionally changing down to third seems a bit stiff - but I haven't been able to reproduce it.

In general, the 2/3/4/5/6th changes are all very smooth though, and at least as good if not better than my old Mk1.

My VRS was quite notchy when I first had it, I've now covered 1300 miles and the change is much improved.

Mine is also very smooth.

I think there are some "notchy when changing gears" comments on the forum by different users.

Mine has this a little also but you can feel the resistance is in the shifter mechanism & not a mechanical resistance from the gearbox itself.

I've not noticed any problems engaging any of the gears.

In fact, I took my wives 320d to BMW this morning complaining about the gear shifter vibration & engagement.

I used the Octavia to explain to them what I expect it to feel like. :)

Does seem to improve with time - better when warmed up.

Thanks all - that's reassuring.
