Cleaned my mirror indicators

Featured Replies

They have bugged me since I got the car, full of green slime as they both had small cracks. As there were no pieces missing I decided to crack them open and clean them.

I separated the two parts using a  blade but to be honest they were so brittle they kind of separated themselves. I then scrubbed them with a dish washing brush, rinsed the lens part and towel dried the led part before drying fully with a hair dryer.

I then re assembled using solvent weld and a syringe to feed the glue along the edges (and fill the small cracked sections), kept them closed with some poundland mini clamps and back on the car.

I am quite pleased with how they turned out. Time will tell if they leak but they were due replacement anyway and this was a last ditch money saving effort. About 40 mins all in for both start to finish.

I also noted there may be the possibility to insert orange LED strips inside and connect to the main wiring, might give that a go another time

Good job mate.

Did this myself about two years ago, (it is mentioned in one of the 'faulty indicator' threads) and although it sealed well, with similar 'two part' glue, I had to replace it on this years mot, due to it not being bright enough.

Hopefully it will last you a few years too. A bit of ingenuity can save you loads, but I think you know this anyway. :) .

Is that your Staffy? in the pic? I have one too. A right pain in the butt, but you gotta love em. Lol.

Mine were never that bright to start with, I guess the fact they were full of water was the reason lol. I am not sure if adding strip LED's would be MOT legal but I'll give it a go at some point.

Thats Lilly, we never call her that though she's nicknamed Peg. She had cancer around two years ago and had a very large piece of her rear leg removed (hence the Peg-Leg) she's my best mate and yes quite annoying but wouldn't change her for the world!

Yes, good on the pictures too mate, might encourage a few others to do a diy fix and save themselves a few quid (£30 each side on mine) themselves.

I don't need any encouragement, always looking for something to fix. You sound the same.

I like things to be right, not so keen on spending money though lol. In fairness I am the only person in the street with two recycle bins that are full come collection day. We throw far too much away, I am happy to sit and separate recyclable parts from containers etc, I have two compost bins, even my dogs waste goes in a wormery. There are names for folk like me I think :D

You could have painted them in body colour while you had them in pieces. Otherwise good fix, not noticed mine looking like that.

I didn't take them off the car and masking them would be a 2 minute job anyway. I may get to it one day but will likely just buy a used pair either in the right colour or already painted to avoid plastic vs paint issues.

These are £13.85 each delivered for genuine items on Ebay. I have just bought 1 for mine as it was cracked.. they are the same as 9n3 polo wing mirrors + indicators aswell
