twincharger. when does your car smoke, and why do you think ?

Featured Replies

interesting this...

as some of you know, I teach to drive in my car (only a couple of hours a week) , and today on a lesson, with a particularly slow and steady pupil, I got a mahooosive puff of smoke out the back of the car ... and I have seen this (rarely) before, and always in the same circumstances, when its been driven gently for a while, and has been coasting off throttle for a while, and then gentle throttle is applied.... it must have burned some oil during this puff of smoke (there was some blue in it) ...

now, the car is being quite good on oil at the moment, its about 1 litre every 4,000 miles...

its following the same pattern it has before...

when driven hard (recently did a track session and santa pod) it doesn't seem to burn oil at all..... I didn't top up in between, and it stayed high .....

since then I have been away in the eunos, and the vRS has stood, then all its done for a while, is gentle drives to work and back, and driving lessons, and I swear it really doesn't like the gentle life, and it starts to go through oil...

(just checked by the way , and its at the top of the hatch) ....

NOW...

theory's on whats happening?

a friend of mine has a tuned octy that randomly (alway on gentle driving) puffs a big cloud of blue smoke out the back... and it doesn't use oil (so must be a TINY ammount getting in the cylinders) and it seems to be a breather system thats probably at fault there...

however , with mine, because this never happens when driven hard (tracks ect) It seems maybe there is a lack of sealing with the pistins when driven gently , or on ovverun for a long time, which then on throttle application, gives the puff of smoke......

in hard driving there is always a good seal, and no oil  used at all..... (for example last year the trip to the rin, entailed fast driving on autobahns, and hairing round the ring, and fast driving back.... 3,000 miles and NO oil used at all!)

so........

what do we think?

is it a lack of sealing with the pistons?

or is it a breather problem?

NOTE: I'm not too concerned, as a litre every 4,000 miles is fine by me , I'm just wondering if someone with more knowledge than I have can offer a convincing explanation as to whats happening!

after next april when the warrenty is out, I will be starting with the engine, and if there is a weak spot... piston rings for example, I would want to fix that first before begining the process..

I doubt warrenty will be useful at this point, as they simply would not be able to replicate the smoke puff (I have seen it about 5 times in 45,000 miles!) and its not an excessive oil user....

thoughts?

In off throttle conditions you get a higher vacuum in the inlet, which could lead to a bit of oil getting sucked down the valve guides.

All the best ones do it.

A thrash a day keep the black soot build up away.

PS.

Twincharger, (Dual Charger),

the Soot blast is nothing to do with Oil users.

Do not compare with  the Turbo Chargers, with them that might well be oil.

I had that experience once of twice in my old CAVE but never experienced it in my Partners CTHE.

I have seen it before and with my old CAVE too (no oil used in that car at all) , so I'm not really concerned, just exploring why....

maybe it was because this is the first time I have seen it from the passenger seat (more attention behind at the time!)

Saying that yours is all good, and most others are is making me happy.

Then i read a post in the Yeti section where it looks like another problem vRS.

Where is vxh26 with advice from his experience of blowing smoke out a back pipe.?

How visible is this smoke that people are talking about? Will you see it on the rear view mirror or the side mirrors clearly as you apply throttle? I've read about it, but in my 4 years of ownership I've never witnessed it myself and my car does use a bit of oil if that has anything to do with it.

This is very similar to how mine behaves. In the winter when its not been driven hard then it will drink oil. Come summer time and its had a service and driven hard every weekend it just sips at the oil. Same if it's been driven gently for too long, first time it's booted then there is a puff of blue smoke out the back. After that it's fine.

It can be a great big puff of smoke if you are just driving easy, then give it a full double kickdown and full beans,

Or if just doing a few gear changes, dropping a gear or 2 and getting a move on a little puff, and another, and another.

Cleaning out the soot,  if you have no soot, then no smoke.

If you have some bore wash and soot, it might be bluer than just black.

No issue if the car runs good, has good fluids, has good plugs, has a good map.

The engine internals do and will get full of carbon because of the EGR valve.

I'm not sure how it could manifest itself as the puff of smoke (well it's obviously getting in the combustion cycle) under the conditions you describe. Maybe its down to the fact that spirited driving usually means everything is hot and you are getting efficient combustion and riding around gently is the opposite and carbon deposits and unburned fuel accumulate then booom..

Have you sold yours yet or had any reasonable offers .

Slightly off topic

Id of loved to learn in a car with abit of poke.

Do you ever get a cocky ****e that just wants to boot your vrs about? Haha

Not advertised it Keith mate. I need to get my finger out I guess.

The reason i know it is in the back box and in the exhaust is because i have had them off, opened,

and also run a car exhaust-less from the CAT, and i know how it sounds, but also know about soot or no soot.

We had a filter on the exhaust to see what oil was or was not exiting the CAT by catching any.

Vrs sound good without the exhaust?

Or just too loud and uncomfortable?

Supercharger, Supercharger - Turbo, Turbo no exhaust from Cat Back.

Hayabusa ish on full chat but a bit louder.

Sounds cool

Bet you wish it went like a hayabusa though haha.

Thatd be a laugh then! :p

Love the supercharger sound though

Mates got a Mini cooper S works GP atm. 218bhp i think.

Supercharger makes an awesome sound from 5k upwards. Sounds mega.

not ever! lol.... I never get 17 y/o's though..... being auto its generally older people, just to make it easier,  Americans , or physically unable to use a clutch.... and all these people just get a bit scared with a bit too much throttle, remember at that point you cant ever steer properly.... so they tend to go quite gently.... the guy in question has cerebral palsy, and can barely walk, but has been given an unrestricted liscence, so its a bit scary for him, as his right leg is generally useless fir him , and now it controll ALL the power! lol....

yet to have a 17 y/o choose to drive an auto.....

edit: AND I only have one insurance company that fits my needs at the moment! lol.... every year in Aug I tell them I may not be able to get renewed for my car on learners! :o

and fabiamk, I have sound proofing and stuff removed from the wall behind the supercharger so my dual controls can go in , so I get a bit more supercharger whine ;)

Fabiamk2SE,

Have you watched Video of the Cooper S Supercharged at Santa Pod. (not a Turbo one)

Maybe good at 5k upwords, but the Twincharger only has Super Charger to 3,500 rpm and Turbo,

and that is good for leaving the Cooper S well behind.

didn't evo test several cars, one was a JCW mini, and one was a standard polo gti, and the polo won to 60 mph and to the quater mile ;) (toms did a respectable 14.4 standard! :o )

Oh crap yeah. That slipped my mind. Pass the test in an auto and you can only drive an auto cant ya.

Ah poor lad. I hope he enjoys the thrill rather than being actually too scared aha. That feeling of uncontrollable power is thr best one, gives a right buzz haha.

Oh yeah! Bet insurance is a nightmare isnt it, even with dual controls (guessin you have them)

Only if you get them off the line with a good start

DOH,

Anyhow, if it worked it has the sort of officially they are 14.8 1/4 mile and 98 mph terminal

So pretty much as a standard CTHE.

Behind a CAVE with 210 bhp

Sounds fun

Does the supercharger completely cut out in the vrs after 4k george? So you dont get a sort of high revving whinning sound near the redline?

How much is a lesson sharkrider? You can teach me to launch a VRS aha

I do need to test drive one tbh aha

No Supercharger from 3,500 RPM on.

This is just before the 132-136 kw engines.
