Gearbox whine 05 vRS (standard) 70k

Featured Replies

Hi guys before I panic is a light whine normal for a vrs? If not I guess I should change my box oil or get my mechanic to. Can anyone tell me correct oil for 2005 VRS and do i need a special tool to drain and fill? I can't make head nor tail of the archived posts here. All seem to say different things.

I hear one say box is sealed dor life and others say 50k with £75 for 3 litre oil!

I'm sure the VW Oil awesomegti used when they installed my diff was a LOT less than that, but you can use fancy stuff if you want.

While I'm sure it can be left for life I've noticed improvements on every box I've done, be it the 70k box on my PD100 or the 115k box on my Celica.

You may find its a 17mm hex (like a giant allen key) or a security spline drive to remove the drain/fill holes on your VRS.

Remove the fill plug first, as you don't want to find you can't get that off after you've drained the oil! :P

Filling can be done via a few methods (pump, funnel + tube etc). Plenty of generic guides out there for that.

Its a spline tool. Not sure the size but its pretty big. Have a look on Opie oils for cheaper oil. Skoda charge ridiculous for there's.

As said above, remove the filler plug first.

Mine is an 05 vrs too 73k on clock and is making a whiney scream noise through 2k revs to 3 1/2k only when foots down too is this the same for you. Is this a common problem with them do you know?

Mine is a light whine like the old 4 speed in an A Series Mini (Metro) if you can remember those. Not evident at high revs but normally second, third and fourth when the engine is under light revs/load. I'll check up on oil. Is it a specific oil of do I just ask for VAG gearbox oil. I know VW are really finicky on their specific oils (like PD engine oild for instance).

It's a specific oil for the 6 speed one as it has brass syncro's, I believe it has to be GL4 specific. But don't quote me on that.

Hi just resurrecting this as still getting mixed messages as which oil to use. Thanks for the link above. No the whine is quite faint and only noticable at low revs say going along at 30mph in third of fourth but also noticable in second. I don't know if all boxes have a slight whine fo them or not as never driven another vrs. Car only done 71K and standard spec. It is annoying but does not seem to affect change quality and can't beat the synchros unless very brutal so don't think it is synchro wear. More annoying really when driving around town. Noise of engine takes over on acceleration and not evident cruising in top.

Will oil fix it? Maybe I am being overly mechanically sensitive but i do notice these things.
