Knocking Octavia Vrs front suspension

Featured Replies

Hi guys, I've had this problem for a long time now, so I have done a lot of research on it. Have had my father in law check all the bushes before it's mot and all seemed fine.

Only just recently decided to change the droplinks on the front as that is easy enough to do. Still knocking and rattling at low speed, turning into my drive over the drop kerb results in a very loud thud and rumble which I can feel through the steering wheel

Any ideas guys, there must be at least 5 bushes per side I can think of not being a mechanic that could be the problem, add the cost of all them up x2 sides I'd be better off selling the car or living with the rattle. Sailed through its mot with just new droplinks however the old ones I took off were solid, no splits or movement.

I'm thinking anti roll bar bushes or strut top mounts. But I've read the anti roll bar bushes can't be changed separately, is this true?

Id wager top mounts. Previous owner of my car replaced pretty much every bush - including new ARBs and he didn't get rid of the knocking until he did the top mounts

I'd 2nd shocker top mounts + bearings..

But I've also come across a similar knock/rattle on a 3C passat (same chassis) and checked all suspension + was fine but still knocking. It turned out to be the engine mount on the cambelt side.. not the 3 bolts from the top but the 3 16mm's going into the side of the engine. 2 were loose and the bottom one had fallen out completely!!

The car had high miles and they must have been left loose when it had its last cambelt replaced :(!

When the engine was running or driving you couldnt hear it but as soon as it hit a curb/ bump it was there

Thanks for the replies, Ive just checked the engine mounts and can't really tell what I'm looking for, never mind seeing all of the aluminium mount to try figure out where the bolts should be.

I've bought some shocks and springs so will check the top mounts upon disassembly

I would recommend replacing top mount bearings at least if you are replacing the springs.

To check the engine mounts use a pry bar or similar to pry between the engine mount and the body to check for noise. If the bolts are loose u will here it and see it

Where is the best place to pick up these parts, do I just need the bearing or do they come as kits. I see there is an skf top mount on ecp but unsure if this is all I need.

Ps any ideas where to find replacement bolts such as a new hub pinch bolt, I can't find them on ecp

Check your subframe bolts before replacing anything. I've had a few where the subframe moves under load. Visually it was all ok and no bolts were loose as such but cranked them up tighter and the noise went

mister-auto does a 2 pack set of bearings and top mounts.

£38 or thereabouts, use promo code AUTO5 for a 5% discount, can't say I've seen a better deal.

try your local skoda dealer or TPS

Strut lower bolt, N-909-548-02, 2 needed

Strut lower nut, N-101-064-02, 2 needed

or amazon

Or go to a fastener shop and get some cad plated (or whatever the latest environmentally friendly substitute is) grade 8 bolts - you can use them over & over again.

I've just had the same problem replaced all bushes and the problem was still there. Convinced it was on my side of the car until I took one of the lads out and he said he could feel the noise coming from under his feet. Thought I would check the sub frame and it was moving about 3-4mm. There was a visible ware mark around the frame. Replaced the 2 centre bolts and placed a spacer kit in retightened all 6 bolts. Feels like a different car now.

OK guys, do all octavia models use the same top mount, as in vrs with 55mm struts and say an elegance with 50mm struts?

Also any ideas on the HID leveller when putting lowering springs on, I take it if the car is lowered evenly ie front and rear same amount I wont have a problem.
