Droplinks knackered?

Featured Replies

Jacked my car up earlier and was poking around. Noticed both droplinks can move easily from side to side is this normal? On my girlfriends focus they are rock solid. Iv changed them before on other cars with less movement because they were knocking but iv not got any knocks.

The quick answer: you've posted because you think that movement in the drop links is not normal, right? Well I'll help you - you're right, movement in the drop links is not normal! :D

They're ****ed as you suspect. But knackered suspension joints don't necessarily always result in a knocking noise. It's nice that, for a change, you've picked up on something that the majority of Joe Public would never check and never know was knackered until maybe MOT time.

Good news is they're cheap and easy to replace, and as you've done them before, you'll have no problem in swapping them for new ones. I've done mine, it's an easy job. Get it done!

Thanks for confirming what I thought lol. I'll get them ordered up and fit them when my r32 arb goes on.

They will move because they have ball joints on each end.

Lots of cars, possibly including the focus you mentioned and golfs etc just have drop links with bushes on each end hence don't move.

The ball joint drop links on the octy are designed to move with the steering

So your saying my droplinks are actually ok?

If theres no knocking or play in the ball joint itself I'd leave them alone

Ah ok,hold on, hold on - yes, it depends upon what you mean by move!

I might have got the wrong end of the stick. Do you mean they move as in they sort of swivel? I which case - as said, don't worry, they're designed to move in this manner as posted above.

I thought you meant move as in wobble about within the cup, side to side sort of thing....in which case knackered as I said.

Can you post up a short video of you moving them and then we can confirm?

I'll post up a video when I can but it's movement from left to right so I guess it would do that actually as you turn the wheel. There is no up and down movement. No knocks but iv got a sqeek drivers front but going to start a new thread on that.
