Mystery brake click

Featured Replies

My Citigo makes a weird, single "click" noise from somewhere on the car when I start to apply the brakes. It's most audible when braking from around 35mph, unless I apply them very gently. The click is intermittent (maybe temperature related), and can come from any corner of the car (though mostly from the front). It can also be heard sometimes when I release the footbrake after applying the handbrake after coming to a stop.

The brakes have been taken apart, checked (including the pad retention pins) and cleaned and nothing appears to be loose or otherwise untoward. They also slow car down properly, so so far only blanks have been drawn on this. Does anyone here have any idea what might be going on?

Is your car a Greentech? Could just be the alternator coming on.

Is your car a Greentech?

No. Standard SE, so just ESP and hill-start control. It didn't make this click when new.

Do your pads release easy from the front after coming off the brake?

Yes, as far as I'm aware --- no sticking.

self adjusters on the rear shoes ?

I don't think those should be actuating on a routine basis; besides, the click frequently comes from the front.

Well it's now turned into an odd crackling noise, only heard when braking lightly and moving slowly. No apparent loss of brake functionality, though.
