Yet another 'what tyres for mk1 octy' thread

Featured Replies

Hi all.

I've sworn by Falken's for years, and have been pretty impressed with my FK453's - but after nearly 17k they are starting to lose their potency quite quickly and I'm looking for a change.

After a lot of reading, I'm now trying to decide between Michelin PS3, Conti SC5 and Good Year F1A2's. They all seem pretty like for like to be honest, though I was pretty impressed with the Conti's on a mates Leon.

All the things I've seen about them both here and elsewhere (and the current prices!) make me think I should go for the F1A2's, but they don't make them in the standard 205/50/17 size that the Octy 1 vRS uses - which means going up to 225/45/17. One one hand this means that I'll get worse MPG (and that is a factor, albeit not a big one - I do 40 miles a day) but the flip side is that based purely on the tyre ratings for fuel economy, the F1A2 is significantly better than the other two.

What i'm after is some real world experience Conti/Mich/GY? 225's vs 205's? I know this subject has been done to death but usually people just recommend whatever they've got - anyone had more than one of these and can comment?

Before anyone chirps in with the inevitable 'get some Rainsport 3's' I've tried them before on a previous car and my wife has some at the moment - I was underwhelmed.

Went with 225/45 in the end, Conti sport contact 5. Very, very impressed. Will hold off on a review until I've had some time with them but so far well worth the cash.
