Advice required - Air Con issues AGAIN!

Recommended Posts

After taking my car into a Skoda dealer last April for a service here in the Midlands, I had to have a new radiator fitted in May and then 2 months later, a new condenser.

After the condenser was fitted, it took 4 visits back to the dealer to get it right because everytime it was sorted, with a day or two, the air was blowing warm again.

In the end, they blamed it on a faulty piece of equipment and finally everything seemed to be ok.

Now since last August (when it was finally sorted), the actual temp outside hasn't been too demanding and the climate control has appeared to have been fine. I also put mesh on the grill to protect the new condenser too.

Now, we have obviously had a couple of days of very hot weather here in England and all i'm getting is warm air again and I want to pursue this matter with both the dealer and Skoda themselves because I have no confidence in the dealer at all in trying to get this sorted.

What would be my best course of action?

Cheers

It would be a good idea to have the car scanned with VCDS to see if there are any fault codes logged. Even if there isn't then you should able to get a better idea of what it is doing.

Now the issue I have with this is when I did this once before, the dealer would not accept anything other than from their diagnotics report.

I had the car serviced last month by an independent and looking at the full diagnostics report they gave me, no faults showed up as far as the climate control is concerned.

Yes, but it will at least give you a starting point. When I had a dead compress there were no fault codes but you could see from the measuring blocks it wasn't working.

Obviously the Condenser is still under warranty and I don't really want to spend out more money to tell me it isn't working or something isn't working.

To be perfecctly honest, I am furious over this. Spent too much money in trying to get this sorted via an official Skoda dealer but wish I hadn't let them anywhere near it.

Have arrived at work this morning and like yesterday morning, the temparature has been about 18 degrees and stuck the CC on LO and it was very cold air coming through.

Is the fact that the temp inside the car yesterday afternoon was that hot that it was taking ages to work? I just remember that when I had CC working before last year, it would get cold straight away and cool the interior.

What I would also say is that the condenser is fine. There is no girgling noise like there was before a new one was fitted.

You can do air con check for errors by yourself. Only thing you need to do is is turn your ignition on at then on your Climatronic  press and hold ECON + internal circulation (i think :) until you hear fans.

I have noticed a great difference between the Climate lo temperature in my estate and the cold air con in my hatch, the hatch cools very quickly to very cold where as the estate takes longer to cool but not as cool as the hatch.

Had a word with a neighbor who is an aircon specialist  and he confirms this as correct.

Could be a problem with your flaps!

When I took my car in for a service, flaps were mentioned. I was told some were 'sticking' and was advised it normally is a result of when air con settings are kept pretty much at a constant.

I was advised to give it a really good full blow as that can normally sort that issue out.

In my experience of both pre & post FL-Octavias with & without Climatronic, the A/C is not the most efficient I've ever experienced & can take a while to get properly cold.

Might it be a dodgy temperature sensor that's causing your woes..?

To be fair, it used to be bloody freezing and worked a treat, but i've only ever had Skoda's with air con and CC.

I know very car savvy, but how would I know if the temp sensor is faulty and where is it?

I believe there are a couple in the cabin & an external one for ambient temperature.

As for exactly where they are & how they can be checked, I'm afraid that you'll need someone with more knowledge than I though I'm pretty sure that scanning the vehicle with Vag-Com/VCDS software would show up any faults with sensors.

That's great cheers. I didn't have any errors come up on the diagnostics when it was serviced by an independent about 3 weeks ago, apart from the one about the flaps which I didn't notice last night.

No probs - sorry I can't be any more help - I would be climbing the walls if I was suffering iffy aircon in this weather - the car declared yesterday that it was 41 degrees in the shade.. :sun:

Hi, just been out to do this and did what you said. Air was cold, heard the fans come on and had two different readings/codes - 4fA on the left and 00.h on the right.

Any ideas what they mean?

I assume your climatronic unit is similar design to that on on the Mk 1 Octavia as you have an ECON button.

4FA is a common failure on Mk 1 and is the recirculation flap valve not working, probably because it is rarely used.

Yours is not the same as it has left and right output controls but the codes are probably the same.
