Alternator problems

Featured Replies

So I've finally pulled my finger out and finished my turbo swap and on start up the alternator is cracking/crunching away. Battery light comes on and off.

Now this wasn't a problem 5 weeks ago when I parked her up. My question is why has it suddenly started doing it?

Also have a fault code with the ABS system but thats more han likey due to the alternator/battery problem.

Cher guys.

Stephen.

Could be that one of the bearings has failed badly, leading to the noise and a wobbling shaft that has the brushes bouncing off the slip-rings?

Why it's happened, I have no idea.

Check the thin wires from the alternator at the multiplug adjacent to where the engine/gearbox join.

If one of these wires breaks- the battery light on the dash does not come on and you get battery charging issues.  If the other one breaks, the ASR light comes on after about 20 minutes driving.

That's what I was thinking, or something dropped down inside it but I doubt it. I'm sure I can get a second hand one cheap enough.

It's not the wires, as the light comes on with the ignition.

Thanks for the replies guys.
