Felicia clicking noise when driving

Featured Replies

Im not sure how this started, but looks like its not even dependant if the engine is running or not (towing), but over speeds of 20, i hear clicking noise which is similar to some relay noise, it does not matter if lights are or or other electronics, it stays about same at speed and goes away standing still or at low-low speed.

I have no clue what could start clicking and why.

Noise comes from the left side of the dash, approx....

Being a LHD car, most probably it is the speedometer cable clicking inside speedometer back plug or speedometer's plastic gears are shifted / worn out. Sometimes the clicking sound is accompanied by the vibration of speedometer needle at speeds below 50 km/h.

If you want to be 100% sure (don't buy anything yet), take the speedometer and the cable out, plug the cable to speedometer and use a drilling machine to rotate the cable. The speedometer must stay fixed in a vise or similar while you bend the cable trying to replicate the clicking sound.

Ultimately you can dismantle partially the speedometer to see what clicks inside. But before taking the needle out you need to mark its position when it's at 50 km/h. If you get to this, I'll show you what I mean in detail.

Ok, is it doable at home without special tools? I really wouldnt want to disassemble dash, because it will be hell of a work and i will probably brake a lot of plastic bits during it. Maybe without achieving anything :)

Also, for years there has sometimes been delay with speedometer needle, for example if i start slowly and go to 50, it even may not start moving from 0, if I knock on the protective glass, it jumps from 0-50 immediately. With more agressive starts it isnt an issue and a knock on a needle works for some time even on slow starts :)

Banging on the dashboard is not a repair... It is proof there is extra friction in the mechanism inside the speedometer.

Given the fact you don't feel skilled enough to get to it, I don't have a wonder solution for you. The speedometer will eventually fail totally from wear and punches. In fact I don't know of any warning sign of failure that developed by itself into a fix. On the contrary, the more you let them unsolved, the more expensive the repair will be. Not to mention that according to Murphy's laws, things break when least expected or desired...
