Ignition Lock

Featured Replies

Hi,

I am having trouble with the ignition lock on my Skoda Fabia 1.4 TSI vRS 2011 model. The key goes in, turns on and off no problems. Its when it is coming out of the lock. When pulled out it used to have a pin click into place and everything would then be off, radio, maxidot etc. but now it stays on which is flattening the battery. There used to be a definite click and sort off pop to it when the key came out before hand. It seems to have got worse the more it is used. The central locking works ok and the car can be left locked and alarmed.

Any suggestions greatly received.

Welcome to the forum.

Sorry but this seems to be the obvious answer and its not meant as cheaky,

You need to have it sorted, it sounds like wear and tear, maybe a new barrel required, and what goes with that,

new key blades and coding.

?

So how many miles on the car, and have you just recently got it.

Any Warranty if you bought used from a Car Dealer?

Not cheeky at all,

It has done 37000 and yes only recently got it in a private sale. When bought it had been sat for a month so not used.

It has just got progressively worse. I am hoping that the battery light coming on is related to the ignition being left on.

The only way I can tell when it is totally off, is when the radio goes off as key comes out and it makes a definite clicking noise.

I am in 2 minds whether to take it to my local garage or get in an auto locksmith.

I know it is not going to be a cheap job but am going away soon so need it to be sorted beforehand.

The steering lock is engaged when inserting the key.

I always make sure it is in the locked position before removing key.

After removal ensure steering lock Is engaged.

I think that it is something to do with the barrel itself.

Decided to take it to local garage and see what they can do. This is something I will not mess with.

Will let you know what he finds out.

Hopefully he can sort it out otherwise its main dealer and very expensive I expect!

Well it is in the garage now so let them sort it out. Will let you know what they find out.

Well there is good news and bad news.

The lock is sorted at no charge it was the spring not springing back.

Just push in the centre bit and it now locks and turns everything off.

The battery light was more serious than needing a charge.

It is the fact that the oil filter has at some point been leaking onto the alternator which is now knackered.

Change of alternator should be done tomorrow and car back with me.

Then I have to sort out the doggy smell from previous owner. Any suggestions????

Good news on the lock. and an odd one on the Oil Filter,

has it been the wrong filter that was fitted or just the seal badly fitted, have you a new filter on now?

What kind of smell, in the car / carpets,  (deep cleaning required)

or in the Air Intakes and A/C.

needing a new Pollen Filter and a Neutraliser through the system to kill any bacteria.

Glad your problem was fixed so easily.

Been having trouble turning the ignition key on the Fabia - it slides into and out of the keyhole easily enough but sometimes will not turn properly. (Its not the steering lock preventing it from tuyrning).

Just been looked at again by the main dealer who says a new ignition barrel is required - quoted £330 including VAT!

Get a little spray canister of lock lube. graphite, not silicone and use it in the barrel and on the key blade, sliding it in and out ,,, (Oh-err missus) A few times. wipe off the excess from the key and give it a few days to see if it helps. Mine used to be quite fiddle but since doing this, it has been simplicity its-self!

might just save you £370. (£6 for the lube, a score in the post for me for the advice...) Lol.

Give it a try.

Unfortunately both the dealer and I have independently tried lubricating the barrel and it has made zero difference.

Looks like I have no other option than an expensive replacement.

I'm worried why the previous owner smelt of dogs. ;)

I need really to go to someone other than Specsavers.

Doh, I read Dodgy smell.

I thought he was maybe a bed wetter.

For the doggy smell.... Clean the upholstery with foam cleaner, hoover after it dries, or even invest in one of those sticky rollers to get rid of hairs. The gel ones you wash are quite good. change the cabin filter and get the whole interior fogged...

I use a fog machine, with the "fogger" brand fogging agent (New car smell, though there are choices). I do my car every 3 months or so. It helps kill bacteria and neutralise nasty niffs quite well.If you have no access to a fog (Smoke) Machine or similar, the small canisters placed in the rear of the car work ok but no-where near as intensively as getting it fogged.

A car valeted will most likely charge you around £40 to £50 to fog it, hence why I purchased one myself. I did intend on doing it as a sideline, charging a more reasonable £20 a go but never got round to it!

I too had sticking lock. Learners struggled to turn car on, although I new the technique  but it wasn't quite right. Dealer lubed, as did I, to no avail. The only lube that did work was the graphite spray, sparking into the keyhole and on to the key and sliding in out repeatedly and turning on-off systematically.  Never been an issue again.

Thanks for all the replies,

The lock is now working again (crossed fingers) and I have removed the doggy smell. Used a cannister of spray the one you put behind the passenger seat. Loads of Fabreeze on seats etc.. This seems to have done the trick. Mind you it did affect my eyes for a couple of days afterwards. I think I must be sensitive to the stuff it squirts out, yes I did not get in the car for several hours and I left the windows wound down even the boot was left open. I have ordered some new carpets from ambassador carpets which should look good. I have one little niggle which I have found on this site is something you either live with or you get it sorted at some expense. Its the issue of pulling to left of the road. I will probably live with it for a while then look into whether my local mechanic/garage would like to have a go at sorting it at the same time as doing the brake pads and discs. Didn't realise how cheap this car is to run when compared to my now gone bigger car (Volvo XC90 4.4 V8).
