Check your rear 3rd brake light (Combi)

Featured Replies

Just noticed my high level rear brake light is starting to come apart. There is a seam around it and the top section is coming apart at the back of it. I might be able to get some clear sealant in but I just ordered a replacement light anyway.

I guess its a pain to remove!

Mine filled up with water. On the estate you need to remove the trim inside the boot lid and undo the two nuts holding it on.

Take care when removing the interior tailgate trim, the plastic lugs can be brittle, especially on older cars.

There is a hidden screw near the grab handle too.

I had a brake light replaced under warranty due to one of the plastic threaded lugs snapping off the back of it that ended up rattling around inside the boot lid.

The metal clips which hold the big panel on the estate boot lid are made of cheese so assume you need to replace them.

Sorry to sort of highjack the topic, just needed to have a gripe. Followed a VW the other day & the owner had installed one of those aftermarket kits that flash the 3rd brake light. At speed I can see the point, but travelling in stop start traffic for over a mile, doing maybe 5mph, that flashing light gets a bit wearying to say the least. :swear:

Definitely a need here for speed sensor technology IMO.

<gripe over>

When sat directly behind him in stop-start traffic, every time he brakes flash your main beam in tune with his brake lights  :D

He's probably too stupid to realise why I was flashing :wall:

Drifting even further off topic, I found this post from 2009 in another forum, quoting what I assume were the vehicle construction & use regulations applicable at the time:

"Lamps to show a steady light

13.—(1) Save as provided in paragraph (2), no vehicle shall be fitted with a lamp which automatically emits a flashing light.
(2) Paragraph (1) does not apply in respect of-
(a) a direction indicator;
( B) a headlamp fitted to an emergency vehicle;

© a warning beacon or special warning lamp;
(d) a lamp or illuminated sign fitted to a vehicle used for police purposes;
(e) a green warning lamp used as an anti-lock brake indicator; or
(f) lamps forming part of a traffic sign."

If he's not a rozzer, a traffic womble or a stationary breakdown or highway maintenance vehicle, it's not permitted.

EDIT:  I'm leaving the auto-changed letters in - it's funny!
