gearbox conversion 5gear to 6gear

Featured Replies

My 1.4 mpi slowda is pretty nasty. When doing 90 on the motorway, the engine is technically screaming at 4000-4500rpm (can't tell for sure). After a short research, I've found this and this. Has anyone tried this before ? I'd fancy for 1800-2000rpm when doing 65, or something like this.

OOor, is there any other gearbox that might just magically fit ? :)

@ Alex - Six speed would probably be far too high geared for the 68 three-legged donky MPI engine. The gearing is low for a reason.

its off a 1.4 16v

its off a 1.4 16v

I know but Alex is saying he wants to put a six speed on an 8-valve MPI.

ok well I got a six speed linkage and cables :)

I still say the 5 speed is better overall anyway...

I'm not doing it to increase the top speed, for sprints - overtakes, it can do 85 in 4th. IMHO, it has plenty of torque for a turtle engine, so it should be able to do 60 at 2000rpm. I just want to add another gear OR replace the 5th one (with one from a diesel gearbox) to allow me to do that. 40mpg with AC on and a full car isn't just right for me (on straight road, without hills). If I drop speed to 45 (and about 2000rpms in 5th), it's able to do 51mpg, with the same load. And I will not start a debate ragarding engine noise when at 3000rpm and doing 60...we all know these just aren't the best soundproofed cars.

My original question was related to that kit which would be supposed to add another gear to VAG cars which have only 5 by default because I don't really have access to Etka and compare the final drives from Fabia gearboxes).

You can hardly hear the engine on mine at 70mph, just road noise. Do what you will though dear Alex

Are you quite sure that the Skoda 1.4 MPI engine is mated to a VAG 02 series gearbox and not a Skoda FWD gearbox such as that found on earlier Felicias etc?

I know that the gearbox in my 1.4 16v is nothing like the box found on TDI's and VRS etc. It's physically smaller and lighter as well as looking completely different externally.

Yeah, pretty sure it's a totally different bellhousing to the VAG engined models.
