To chip or not to chip

Featured Replies

So, 1.9 tdi mark2, 105bhp. The years warranty is up this week, so I planned to chip it. Not that I really need it to be faster. Its a family holdall, it doesnt get driven hard, whats the point?? But I figured it would be a lot more effortless. Similar to my 05 2litre 140.

Good news is it adds precisely 2 quid to the annual insurance. I have been recommended the Shark chip fitted by a reputable company at 249.

Now I am thinking, do I need to do it? 249 is a few years servicing.

The car has been great the past year, faultless. It does a fair bit of short journeys, so the mpg of about 42/43 is probably about right I think. So my question is, am I likely to get better mpg after chipping?

Because if not, I don't really need it.

If I do go with the chip, is that about the right sort of money, and can I have recommendations for someone to do it at that price or cheaper, anywhere from east scotland down the A1/M1 to yorkshire.

Thanks.

£249 seems very very cheap for a shark remap...mine was £400.

Shark map for me. My advice definately go for it as it'll be the best money you'll spend on the car. It just makes them effortless to drive. Loads of low down torque and just frees them up. £300 for me i think £400 is a little bit too much.

Please let me know how it goes if you get it chipped as I have the same engine with DSG. I'm after mapping both though.

you will get better mpg providing you drive the same as you do now more power/torque means lower revs at the same speed so better fuel probably 5 to 10 mpg more BUT you will not drive it the same for the first month or two PPPOOOOWERRRRRRR

Do it. The end....

What they said ^^^^

it's not about the power - it's one of those "sum of the parts" equations.

bargain price too.

Do it. The end....

Yeah, pretty much that. I had the 1.9 Elegance remapped (£250  W8 christmas special - Mmap + STS) wholly worth doing. The MPG went up, the power went up, the fun went up and it can shift, better than a Vectra or Mondeo.

£250 - would do it again in a heartbeat. (Very nearly did it to the Scout, but that will be going soon)

Blacksmoke...?

Folks many thanks for all the replies, very helpful. I will get it done and post the results. How does one become a freedom member?

Just need to research the other jobs now and try and get them done as well - egr blanking plate, haldex fluid (and filter?) change, condenser, cruise control retrofit.....................stand by for more queries!!!!!

Thanks Mike. I have read an awful lot of threads, many have your name somewhere, and I learned a great deal, and laughed quite a bit as well, air con condenser thread - laureene!!! I have forgotten some, and failed to understand others.

My 06 1.9pd has the classic occasional stuttering in third on light throttle, the fix appears to be an egr blanking plate with a 11.5ml hole in it, so that the warning light doesnt come on, and it doesnt choke on the recirculated gases. That is what I intend to do, and I believe I won't need anything additional to the planned chip to stop the light coming on, because I am not blocking off the egr altogether.

The haldex is fairly straightforward, the car is 9 years old coming up for 80k miles, the fluid was changed at 40k, I might as well change the filter as well as the fluid this time, a bit pricey but wont have to worry about it again for a long time, and I need it to stay reliable and work  up here.

My 05 2.0pd elegance, the air con isnt working, it got a regas, it worked fine for a month, so I am content that the compressor is okay, and that there is a leak. I just need to track down the leak, replace the part, and regas, hopefully.

The cruise control, crikey. The 2.0pd came with a spare cruise control stalk, which was taken off as faulty, and which clearly needs a good clean, the copper connectors are black. I plan to strip it and clean it as per advice on this site. I may then ask some advice on whether it needs soldered, as another thread suggested. I would then like to fit it to my 05 car, but my 05 and 06 cars appear to have different multi function dash displays. I think what I need to do is get the part number from the steering controller box thing on the 06 car, then I will be able to confirm if the stalk is compatible with that black box, I also need to check if there is a wire running from pin13 on the 06 controller, and if they are compatible and the wire is there, then it is a straight swap. Then there appear to be plenty helpful folk with VCDS or similar to activate it?

So thats where I'm at. If I am on the right track and can get a move on, then I can hopefully get all this done before anything else goes wrong.

Thanks, Dean.
