Electrical issues

Featured Replies

Hoping you guys can help me with this one as I'm about all out of ideas. I've had some alternator issues with my 04 vrs before but this one is strange.

A couple of weeks ago my wife had an issue where a few lights came on the dash like abs, ecu light but no alternator light. I told her to turn the car off and try restarting it. The car would then not crank over at all and she had to get towed back.

I jumped started the car when it was back home and then disconnected it and it ran fine for ten mins. So switched it off and on again and it would crank. So I thought that meant battery, got the garage to check and they said the battery had gone, changed it and all good.

However this morning it's done the same, steering felt heavy like the power steering wasn't working, CD player kept switching on and off but this time no warning dash lights. Had to jump it again but it now won't try to crank over again to start.

Has anyone got any ideas what it could be as I am at a loss now. Any help to fix this would be ace.

Thanks a lot

Does battery light come on with ignition, then go out if/when the engine starts?

Just checked now and when I turn the ignition on, the battery light does not come on. When I started her off my other car the battery light def went out when she started though.

Look for a blue wire coming from alternator which has a plug/socket connection (with another wire which may also be broken) on a bracket hanging off the front of your gearbox. Access from below.

As above, the load signal wire from your alternator is frayed or broken somewhere. Had this a while back, never noticed i had no battery light on the dash until I was broke down at the side of the road lol

There are two wires that go the to multi plug you are looking for.  One is for the battery light as Wino has indicated.  The other, if it breaks, causes the traction contol light to come on 10 to 20 minutes after starting the engine.

Sorry guys I've been away all weekend. I'll have a look in the morning but that sounds exactly like the issue regarding the traction control light coming on. Sounds like maybe both wires might be broke tbh.

As usual this forum starts to save the day rather than me taking it to a garage for them to try and diagnose. This car seems to be cursed when it come to electrics :-)

Thanks for your help and I'll report back once I've hopefully found the broken wire.

Hey guys, it was indeed the load sensor wire that had snapped. Managed to tell the garage when I dropped it off and sorted ready for the end of the day. No lights at all on the dash now as long may it continue!

Thanks again for your help and advice
