Removing plastic tailgate cover ( Combi )

Featured Replies

Could only see one screw.... had a good pull and push but didn't want to damage it. Whats the secret ?

Pull harder!

Oh and buy some new clips, they're made of cheese.

Then I pulled the handle off doh !! Where's the best placard to start pulling ? Is it best to get something to prise it with ? Would I be better getting clips before I take it off ?

So many questions :-)

I would start at the top by the wiper. I just used my fingers, but maybe wear gloves.

Yes buy a full set of clips as several will bend or break. It's fiddly to get back on as the clips can easily bend.

Will do.... I'm hoping its a gold Doubloon :-D

I got a set of trim removal tools from somewhere, probably Amazon, and I managed to get all of the tailgate trim off without damaging any of the clips.  A few were dislodged slightly, but I just refitted them properly and they all fitted back in perfectly.

This is the set I used:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/PIECE-CAR-TRIM-REMOVAL-MOULDING/dp/B004OEL4LW/ref=sr_1_1?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1437254501&sr=1-1&keywords=11+piece+car+trim+removal

Four of the clips on mine snapped when I pulled the panel off.

Which ones? All the ones on mine are metal ones, which can bend if forced back without being lined up. On the octavia, the only clips I have ever snapped are plastic ones on the door cards, and the tailgate trim doesn't have any plastic ones.

Mike

The sort of W shaped metal ones, the central bit that goes into the tailgate snapped off.

Replacement ones only cost pence.

OK Managed without braking anything !!

And here's the culprit...  Examining the high level brake light I can see some moisture in it so I wonder if it's because the gasket isn't tight enough on the right hand side now .... Annoying but I can live with it ...

Questions then :

1) Will it allow water ingress into the tailgate ? If so then I guess I better get it sorted.

2 ) Anyone know how much the part is ?

3) I pulled the rubber strap off and now cant get it back on !! Is their a secret to it lol ?? !!

TA !

Well mission almost successful.... They gave me the wrong clips so I didn't take the trim all the way off. Just the top bit near the light.

I'm glad I saved the plastic nut because they weren't included with the fitting !

The gasket around the lamp was totally knackered.

Failed with the rubber boot handle though.... Spent 30 mins with it before giving up. Didn't want to take the trim off incase I broke a clip.

Sooooo... Rubber handle is now a nice decoration !

I can see how the dealers make their money though..... If I hadn't been a dumb ass and pulled the handle off the actual replacing of the light took 15 minutes..... They wanted to charge me £40 for that !

Yep 30 for doing the high level and 10 to stop the rubber being a decoration. I always just remove the top trim like you did. Hate those stupid clips. In the old days everything was screwed together.!
