oil change

Featured Replies

looking  to do oil change on my skoda octavia classic 1.9tdi 05 mk 2,,seen some on utube using a pump to suck oil out the dip stick is this the way its got to be done or can you do it the old way sump plug out,, :coffee:

Draining the engine oil via the sump plug is the preferred method for a thorough drain over the quick and convenient pump method.

I used a pump last time but am going back to removing the plug.

My driveway is on a gradient so I'll drive over two bricks to level the car and this should give me sufficient room to reach in with a socket.

From what I recall last time I was under the car there are only a few torx screws securing the rear of the plastic engine shield that needs pushing out of the way, I'll probably make a drain hole in that for future draining access.

As far as renewing the sump plug... I just clean mine and give it a smear of silicone instant gasket around the mating surface under the head of the bolt.

Good advice about the draining method.

As MicMac says you will need a tad more clearance under the car than is normally available to remove the under-shield and sump plug comfortably, so raising the front of the car a bit is good advice too.

Be careful if you raise the car up on bricks - they are brittle and can split suddenly without warning, especially if placed on a rough hard surface like a concrete driveway. You don't want to be under the car when this happens.

I'd use a new sump plug & washer, they're only a couple of quid. Be sure to torque it up correctly and that the lip around the plug hole is clean when the plug goes back in. But many people do reuse the plug and washer without a problem, so it's your call.
