Brake light switch/EPC light

Featured Replies

Hi posted this on the DIY brake light switch guide but wasn't sure if anyone would see so hope it's alright to post again...

got a couple problems if anyone could help me out

My EPC light has been on and have had a few running problems i.e bit lumpy/strange idle, loss of power, longer start when hot... but no problems with brake lights.

There was only 1 fault showing up when read, which I was told was switch by brake pedal (annoyingly don't have fault code), so guessing it was this switch as can't find any others?

Thanks to the guide I've replaced brake light switch, however my brake lights are stuck on constantly now, I've tried several different ways of fitting with piston part all the way out and both pedal depressed and not depressed but no luck... lights stay on.

Anyone have any idea?

Also if the EPC fault was sorted with this switch, will the EPC light still be on and has to be cleared to get rid of it?

Cheers

As long as you have bought the latest version of these switches, ie the one with the big black lump at the connector end, you should be able to remove the switch and refit it with the brake pedal at its upper limit - ie "brake off" and then make sure that you rotate it until you feel a click. If you are not rotating it correctly then it will never work.

If you have bought an earlier version of this switch, the one with the violet end on it for example, it has been said that you can break it first time round if you don't fit it correctly - not my experience, as I did fit one of these violet ones with no problems years ago.

Sounds like you are not rotating it far enough while fitting it, you do need to be a bit rough with it, maybe try getting the old one to work the lights first - that might give you enough confidence to fit the new one correctly. Maybe a "too late" tip, but for my money, with a part like that, I'd always buy new as these switches, though not that version, have a chequered history wrt reliability.

I'll change that last comment as hopefully you were just using that ebay listing to show the type/version that you bought!

I'm guessing that lights stay off when the switch is removed?

Cheers for the help, sorted it now. I ended up checking both switches while not fitted and the new switch wouldn't turn the lights off when depressed, so took the switch apart to find the tab inside that connects the switch's contacts broken so used the old part in the new switch and it works fine :)

And yeah I had bought a new one, that listing was just to show the type.

Hopefully it's sorted the problem's relating to the EPC light, light's still on but I'll have to get it read again to see if the fault has cleared.

Cheers
