Route Logging - Video and GPS

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Bit of an odd request at work...

I've been asked if I know of a way to record a route of a vehicle (in this case bin lorry) so that another driver can follow the vehicle and the GPS log.

My initial thought was dashcam/dashcam software on a mobile but I don't know if it's possible for it to record a whole route/round in one go - looking about 6/7 hours worth or recording a logging in one lump...

Any ideas? I'm a bit lost on this, I don't tend to venture out of Server 2012 in the office much these days...

Are the fleet tracking products too expensive?

You could use something as simple as a cycling tracker app on a GPS enabled phone. Couple of quid would probably give you the data you needed.

We've got fleet tracking (TomTom Webfleet) but it's not giving us the video (and the tracking can be squiffy given the fact that Cornwall has numerous blackspots for GPS and mobile signal). The vehicle CCTV isn't the best and isn't really up to the job of being used for recording routes as it can barely manage incidents (that's another story, but cheap hardware with terrible software obviously isn't going to give good results).

It's combining the video with the GPS in one go that seems to be an issue - I've been looking at the dash cam apps with will do both, but not for a long period of time...

My dashcam holds about 4.5 hrs of 1080P footage on a 32GB SD card, and this is embedded with GPS data.

I've got a Novatek B40 A118 - https://dashcamtalk.com/b40-a118/

Most will take a 64gb and some will now take 128GB cards, so you should easily be able to find one that suits your needs.

Played back with Registrator Viewer, you get the following view. Nice and clear with speed and map of the journey logged.
