Bike transport options for a 2011 Octavia

Featured Replies

I normally drive to France each summer to camp with my family. We normally bring 3 bikes and a roof box to ensure capacity for tenst, luggage, etc.

I have a Saris bones 3 bike rack that worked perfectly with my old Focus. It uses J-hooks to latch on to the top, side and bottom of the boot. This arrangement is not possible with the Octavia because the top of the boot is glass without a metal surround.

I already have roof bars for the roof box but could probably only accommodate 1, possibly 2 bikes alongside the roof-box using a roof-mounted bike carrier.

I considered a tow-bar mounted bike carrier but that looks like it'll cost at least £200 for a tow-bar to be supplied and fitted and then I have to buy the tow-bar mounted bike carrier which is an additional cost.

Wondering if anyone has any suggestions? Currently I'm going to head to Halfords and see how many bikes I can squeeze alongside the roof-box.

My daughter has just learned to ride her bike without stabilisers so this is an interesting thread. I would prefer bike(s) on the back rather than the roof.

Most bike carriers hook over the top of the boot lid by the hinges, not the top of the glass? Or is yours a hatch?

If you do a lot of cycling (as in regularly) then a towbar and rack is the best option IMO.

I had a boot mounted on on my Octavia which was good, but not always easy to fit perfectly. Solid once in place, even with 3 adult bikes on.

It lifted the bikes above the lights and number plate therefore keeping it legal - something I don't think the Saris Bones does without an additional light board.

I've fitted a detachable Skoda towbar to my Yeti for less than £260 and bought an Atera Strada DL3 which although not cheap is an excellent and easy to use rack. I'm very happy I spent the extra money on this one!

I've just added the fourth bike adapter and will be using that on a run from the Midlands to Cornwall soon and then a holiday in Scotland. Fingers crossed it all goes well.

Back on topic, other than a trailer (which would do away with the roof box) with bike racks on top, you'll be limited by the width of your bars (which can be up to the width of your wing mirrors, I believe) and the size of your roof box.

Longer bars may be a solution to the problem...

Where did you manage to get a detachable tow-bar fitted for £260? The dealer wants an additional £200 for the electrics - the thick end of £500 for a non-detachable tow-bar! I've told them where to go on that one but they quoted £400 to supply and fit a detachable tow-bar.

I bought one with genuine Skoda electrics from Skodateile and fitted it myself.

Hi my bike rack does not fit anymore due to the spoiler on my vrs mk2(previously used on my mk1 Leon cupra) any recommendations on a roof rack and roof rack cycle carrier for my mountain bikes cheers posted on this to save starting another thread:-)

'curium' is yours an estate?

If so, I have a 3 bike carrier up for sale that should fit. Have a look in the 'For sale' section.
