Knock when changing gear.

Featured Replies

Well sort of.  I've had my track rod ends changed under warranty, which has solved a creak, but not a knock.

Coming from the front nearside - it happens when i go over bumps at slow speeds sometimes.

Today I noticed (whiile stuck in 3 miles of slooow moving traffic) that when I am in gear moving with moderate go, when I depress the clutch I get it most times.

If I have the handbrake on and let the clutch partially out in gear, when I press the clutch I get it most times.

The noise is very similar to a pivot bearing going bad on a citroen BX! - I'm sure you all know what that sounds like.

I'm thinking driveshaft, but only because it seems to be drivetrain related... Has anyone had any similar?  I thought the dealer might need a point in the right direction this time as they'll probably just try and change the track rod ends again otherwise...

Have you checked that the locking nuts to the track rod ends are tight?  Whoever changed them might not have tightened them up.

Also check the exhaust system hangers and the alignment of the system. That too will cause a knock now and again if it's not right. The fact it happens when you connect or disconnect the power indicates it could be that. Other suspicious characters are the engine/gearbox mounts. Make sure they are tight. Could be the top strut bearing on that side of the car. Don't rule out that the noise is coming from the opposite side of where you think it is. That happens often. It's difficult for any of us to be precise without hearing it. Deep knocks will be this or that, a ligher knock will be something different. Good luck with your hunt and post back when you find it. Thanks.

I had a similar concern. I was sat in my car that was in my workshop and i was getting ready to leave to go home.

I selected 1st and just as i was about to pull away from out of the workshop i heard a loud knocking sound. I was pretty concerned at first but it turned out to be someone at the door. Nothing wrong with the car.

Thanks chaps - I'll have a quick look over the weekend.  I'm due for my 1st service in about 4,000 miles which I'll get to before the end of Sep, will raise it with a dealer then.

10 points Estateman - this ended up being the rear engine mount needing replacement, and the gearbox mount needed to be taken out, and put back in again.

Just in case this comes up again - has apparently happened on a couple of Montes that the mechanic knew of.
