Airbags and removing trim

Featured Replies

In order to install my handsfree kit and a few other items i need to drop out my glove box and possibly an A pillar cover. I'm worried about working around these areas because of the front and curtain airbags.

Any advice folks on how to go about it without affecting the airbags or breaking anything?

Cheers.

The a pillar cover just pops off and the curtain airbag stays behind. There is a wiring loom behind there which you can follow which wont effect the bags operation. Just make sure any mics etc wont interupt the trim if it needs to come off during airbag deployment.

The glovebox comes out easy enough, you will need to unplug the switch for de activation which will put the light on. Can be put out by your dealer.

I've put my unit behind the panel under the dash and wired it to the back of the stereo.

The centre console comes off quite easily if you are gentle. You'll need to buy a little green adaptor for the back of the stereo to get the phone to work through the car speakers. Part cost

Thanks guys although i'm having 2nd thoughts about removing the glovebox as it's a lease car and I don't want the dealer complaining about me tinkering with the car.

I thought the A-pillar cover would be easy to remove but wasn't sure. one of my workmates got this so called specialist to install his bluetooth kit and he didn't have a notion about car electrics but managed to get the wiring in there.

Sooty, you say you put your handsfree stuff is behind the dash. How does that panel below the dash drop down? I noticed 2 plastic retaining screw things i think but they don't seen to come out ? I assume the green connector you mean is like a mini iso 2 pin job (that's what it looks like you need from the back of the radio anyway). I'd planned to make one up using a butchered IDE cable but if the correct item is available i'd prefer to get one. Is it a VAG part? Where can I get one as quickly as possible?

Thanks again

Is there rubber trim around the edges of A pillar (you know the one to seal the door to the body), not sure about Octy 2, just going by Octy 1. You could pull this off and route the cable down the side of it.

I,ve done something like that with my radar detector supply cable but i've got a few cables to go in so it might look messy. Cheers though.

Just be carefull with sticking wires down the side of trim over curtain airbags, its not meant to be there and may hamper the airbag.

Lummox, Would you need to disconnect battery if removing the cover ? Just wondering incase of accidental activation ?

I'm pretty sure that airbags are battery backed in case your car battery is cut off in a crash or an engine fire. There's a procedure for de-activating them (at least there was on my old civic).

I think (hope) it's pretty difficult to set of an a airbag by accident as all the wiring is usually colour coded etc.

Interested to hear what your experience is Ross though.

You dont need to disconnect the curtain airbag when removing the a pillar trim, the trim is much the same as a normal trim.

What I meant was would tampering with the trim cause accidental activation.

No, the trim and bag are not connected in anyway.
