Dipstick levels

Featured Replies

Hi

I've searched the forums but cannot find the answer to the quantity of oil required to top up from the minimum to the maximum mark on a 2.0 TDI dipstick - the handbook does not help either. Does anybody know if its half or 1 litre?

One litre will go from the botom to the top.

But add a bit at a time and recheck.

Damn near impossible to see where the level is I reckon

Better when dipsticks were shiny metal then you could see the oil OK

As far as I know the low oil level warning comes on at the min mark and you need a full litre to bring it back up.

Strange dipstick though. It's like a little bottle shape at the bottom. I can only assume the top of the bottle shape where the dipstick goes flat again is the max mark and vice versa for the bottom.

Look carefully at the ridiculously shaped plastic tip of the dipstick. There are tiny max and min arrows. Could anyone design such a simple item yet essential item with less though for the user?

Cheers, i'll look out for that

It isn't all that bad! There are also kind of cut out notches where the max/min lines are, and when the oil has had a bit of use, and becomes darker, it shows up okay against the markings. I'm now well over 3000 miles without any significant dropping in the level.

I hate the dipstick too! I had to add a litre at about 15k, (light came on) done 19k now, just had her first big serveice.

My 6 week old Occy II 2.0TDi Elegance PD asked for oil after just 4,000 miles. I had checked it when new and it was full. It's not a very pleasant experience when you're 200 miles from home 80mph down the M6 then "Bing" and the dash says 'Check oil level'. Checked the dipstick, no oil! Spent an hour trying to find a Halfords that had the special oil. Gosh these PD's can burn some oil when bedding in. It's been ok since, done another 3,000 miles on a litre of oil

All diesel engines use oil while they bed in' date=' it's not sothing to worry about. I've had Vauxhall, ford and Rover diesels in the past, along with a succession on "agriculrural" 4X4's and they have all used a bit of oil in the first 4-5000 mls .

My last Octy 110 did the same, but after one top up it never used oil between services.[/quote']

Thank you Slider, another quick question about running in is; I have been told that thrashing a Diesel when new,

The advice from the long life oil people is that you should stay below 1/2 throttle for the first 100 miles and then progressively thrash it basically. The long life oil apparently clings to the cylinder walls and affects compression. If it's not burnt off where it crosses the piston rings it affects performance and economy. I'm up up to 650 miles now and took it pretty easy up until 500 miles. I've started to push it harder since then though and I have to admit the harsher I treat it the smoother and quieter it seems to get. My fuel economy overall is on the up too. Who would have thought eh!

Done 30k and still using plenty, I always keep a top up bottle in that handy elastic strap in the boot.
