I know this thread is pretty old now, but I too have been looking to fit 225's to my VRS but until now have been put off by the talk of increased MPG. I've read lots of posts where people state losses of up to 5 MPG so I'm thinking it could also be a combination of tyre manufacture too? I'd be interested to know which tyres you had fitted?

Brand and tyre etc will make a difference I would have thought.

Since my 'experiment' above I settled back into my normal driving style and would say overall difference on 225's compared to 205's is less than 1mpg at worst. I had Continental SportContact 5's in the 225 size - they replaced some Falkens. Since changed again to Michelin PS4 in the 225 size and they have made back the 1mpg difference plus a bit more, so there's a lot of variables at play.

^^ agreed! My rough breakdown of the factors in fuel economy would be as follows:

 

5% tyres

5% engine/transmission health

15% tyre pressures

75% driving style

 

I'm on 225/45 Eagle F1 Asymettric 2s and it's still possible to get 40mpg in the right conditions.

Thanks for the info. Looks like I'll be going down the 225 route then. Had already been looking at the F1's or the Barum Bravuris 3HM's the both seem to get great reviews!
