Can anyone drive a car on-track?

Featured Replies

Just to satisfy my curiosity...

Do you have to own and be insured on the road in the car you are driving on-track? Or can anyone with a license drive your car with your permission?

I'm thinking of in the near future letting my other half drive my car on-track if it's possible (god help me!). Now obviously a full license is a necessity... but can she drive it without on-track without being insured on it for the road?

How much does track day only insurance tend to cost? Would they cover other drivers like in the situation above?

Apologies if this is in the incorrect section! I was unsure where to put it :D

They just check your license, not ownership of the car.

Insurance is invalid.

That's why you have to buy additional track insurance.

You can let anyone that's signed on as a "driver" for the day drive.

Not sure about the cost of track day insurance as I've never bought it.

But read the small print, excess can be huge.

Cheers Richard.

Yeah I knew normal insurance was invalid once on-track. Any idea how much companies tend to charge for track-only insurance?

Good to hear this anyway :)  Well... maybe. As it means she'd be driving my car ha ha!

Can you tell I'm new to this track-day malarkey ;)

Hi,

If you'd like a quotation for a one off track day even please feel free to give us a try. If you wanted to PM me some contact details I'd be happy to arrange for one of my quotes team to give you a call back.

Regards,

Dan.

I paid £80 for insurance for a day at Brands Hatch. The small print says it only covers accident damage for the age of the car.

Newer cars would cover mechanical failures too

Oh and most companies don't insure castle Combe or the nurburgring

Why Castle Combe? I think the ring has something to do with the ARMCO but Combe?

Due to the action days there is a high level of offs. Not much run off either so usually end up with a fair amount of damage

I'm so glad that the track day at Combe is solely for our group. There is some seriously stupid driving on that clip! Hardly refined...

It'll be my first track sessions ever. No way I'm pushing it to the limit!

Just take it easy at combe, it's a very rewarding and fun track but can bite very hard. First few laps let everything warm up. You're more than welcome to follow me at castle combe I'll be easy to keep up with in my 60bhp citigo lol

The "briskie" bunch are some of the best behaved out there, though there is always one nut case.........not naming anyone :P but he has very good track manners!

As above license is the important part....though why you would ever let your other half drive your car around a track is the real question!

That footage is enough to persuade me to spectate only!

I'd need brave boots, a lot of tuition & someone else's properly set-up car to participate.

As in, can you imagine my big silver barge making a fool of itself on a track?

DC

I make a fool of myself in a 60bhp citigo, trust me I'm passed by everyone (but then so was I in my Octavia combi). But I enjoy it.

The "plonkers" in that clip are not in the Briskoda session......thankfully or I'd be coming straight in to the pits!

Most people do not have insurance when on a trackday, I would assume the few who do have very expensive new cars and just want he experience of driving on a track once in their lives.

Some trackday organisers do have cars you can rent for the day which may suit the Mrs. better.   My wife and daughter have both been on track in my Westfield and have had no experience before, wife was petrified and won't drive again but the daughter loved it and will go again. My advice is to go on an airfield trackday with her, plenty of run off and no armcos/walls to hit.

as long as you don't bring a GT-R and eat kebabs on track, should be fine :)

On average premiums are 1 to 1.5% of the value of the car with 10% as the excess.

Plenty still cover the Ring for track days only not TF.  If you have a cheap track car then maybe its not worth the cost especially if you do lots of trackdays.  I don't bother with the civic.  However in the past when i used my daily 130i for trackdays i did insure through Moris.   If you own a car on finance i would also say insurance is worthwhile.

On the whole policies DO NOT cover track damage  they also DO NOT cover third party.  However some do but they are paid extras, so say at the ring you can cover a certain amount of damage.

Just to put this in perspective, just 4 weeks ago i went over to the ring for a trackday with my mate in his 991 GT3, we discussed the insurance on the way over and he chose not too.........second day we crashed at 150mph and repair costs are currently at £85,000................  obviously thats extreme and he can actually cover it but it just shows that if you have a pricey car and don;t have the cash insurance is worth it.

heres a nice little titbit, a lot of german road policies even cover them on trackdays......lol

It's all good fun with these briskoda peeps, done it 2 years ago and got lapped by them all, enjoyed it and I would do it again. Be sensible and now who's approaching from behind, I went on YouTube and watched the incar footage of the previous briskoda drives at castle coombe, learnt abit of the track but totally different driving it real time changing down and accelerating, you'll have a ball.

Anyone on here own the black Fabia at the bottom left at around 30 seconds in?

I don't know if this is of any use but my cousin recently went on a track day and he used Moris Motor Sport Insurance to cover him when he was on track. He said that they were really helpful and it was easy because you can do it all on line.

Hope this helped a bit.

Moris seam good for me so far, Did £1700 worth of damage at Snetterton on the 9th and with excess insurance it looks like I'm only going to have to pay £125. Just need to organize when the repair is going to happen now and when I get paid so I can pay the body-shop.

Also worth noting when you get track insurance you organize the repair, not them. So you chose where it goes ect.

Have you done more damage to the car! :)

Not the same car I stuffed into the hedge. Not the car I had when I came to yours.
