Buying columbus head unit advice

Featured Replies

HI, am looking at buying this unit for my 2007 octavia vrs

http://www.adverts.ie/8656669

The seller says he has all cables and code except gps antenna.

Also says some of the sticker is gone and can't read first half of the model and serial. Was wondering is there anything I should consider apart from Canbus which I can pick up second hand.

I wanted this unit as it gets great reviews and should work with my maxidot, rear parking and climate control etc.

Any advice or opinions much appreciated.

you should be fine with that unit just ask to see working before you buy if your collecting / gps aerial approx £10 ebay & it will need coding with vcds / you should have no probs with your installed canbus if coded properly.

thanks murph , I have access to a vcds but have never used it .

Is the software easy enough to use or is it a fairly specialised setup . ( I work in IT so would be fairly savvy)

In a 2007 you may or may not need a canbus upgrade. It was around that time that they put a newer version in (my 57 plate didn't need an upgrade).

It won't work with rear parking or climatronic though.

Will work with maxidot.

Depending on the age of the unit you might then want to consider updating the maps and firmware.

Thanks, I can live with that, cant seem to find Canbus, went looking behind glove box, anyway will cross that bridge etc.

Just wondering shoukd I be aware of anything other than getting the code from seller when buying secondhand. Am happy enough to update firmware, maps etc. Also it's HW:H52 and SW: 2844, presume that's hardware and software.

What versions of maps and firmware are current.?

You might not need coding - when I upgraded the Stream in my 2007 Octavia to a Columbus it all worked fine including nav instructions on the maxidot etc.

Your car is just on the crossover point of them moving the canbus. If it's not behind the glovebox then it is on the drivers side behind the relay board.

You can get at it 2 ways. Either remove the plastic panel outside the car where the wipers are and there's an access panel or remove the plastic panel below the steering wheel, unclip the relay board and there is just enough room to get to it there but is a tight squeeze.

Also lots of info here about updating the firmware and maps;
