Southampton to Glasgow - ideas

Featured Replies

Hi,

So, i'm picking up an Octavia vRs 220 DSG on Saturday morning in Sparshatts in Botley, Southampton.

I've been thinking about the long return journey to Glasgow and wondered if anyone knows a more interesting way than dual carraigeways/motorways to get to the M6?

I don't mind spending a bit of time faffing around and slowly making my way up to the Birmingham area as it will be a good opportunity to get to know the car and have a bit of fun at the same time.

Ideally I'll join bigger roads near the M6 Toll and cruise home so if there are any known routes north from Southampton i'd appreciate it.

Cheers!

Craig

A34 but it's a horrible road

I was thinking make for Salisbury, then Cheltenham. After that it's a bit up to you but IMO there's no such thing as an "interesting road" between Worcester and Stoke-on-Trent so you may as well go M5 - M6.

Not the fastest possible run, but an interesting mix of roads, and as a bonus you get to use 2 of the old Roman Roads, and when you drive the Fosse Way in particular you realise just how straight they did build them.

A36 over to Salisbury, then Warminster

A350 north out of Warminster, to M4

Straight over M4 Roundabout, road changes to A329 (which is actually the old Fosse Way)

Go through / past Cirencestester, carry on A329  until you go through a Village called Halford

At the roundabout immediately after, take the right fork, leaving the A329, which goes off to the left, staying on the Fosse Way which becomes B4455.

Keep going up the Fosse until you come to the A5, turn right up A5 - Watling Street.

Then it's up to you how you carry on North - M6, M6 Toll, A51 up to Stoke-on-Trent etc.

(I drive this route a lot, in separate bits, and whilst the car and I can find our way blindfolded, it's harder to write than I thought)
