Diesel now cheaper than petrol?

Featured Replies

I've noticed recently that diesel is now cheaper in most places than petrol.

When did this happen and why? I can't see HMG reducing the duty on diesel?

From what I understand some new diesel refineries have opened in the middle east meaning there is a surplus of supply and more competition, so prices have come down.

oh I see. Of course we closed one of our few diesel refineries here in the UK in our infinite wisdom. Was it Coryton? (might not be speeled correctly?)

Not seen it cheaper, but seen it the same price at a large number of forecourts I've passed lately

Diesel has been several pence cheaper around here for a little while now.

Makes me glad I have a diesel, currently cheaper per litre and more mpg! Haha

Locally diesel is 106.7 and unleaded is 111.7. Been cheaper for a while now.

Come to ireland the land where diesel has been cheaper than petrol since the famine...

Same round here 5-6p cheaper than petrol.

Or more people going to petrol and/or hybrids meaning more money to be made in tax from petrol than diesel (cynical me?).

Though typical as I've now gone to petrol that diesel is now cheaper!

Diesel is about 5p/l cheaper here and has been for a couple of months.

How does that work?

The duty on petrol and diesel is the same (58p / litre)

Ditto, with a Lexus hybrid.  But we still have the oil burning Fabia

But that will change again come winter when the US starts consuming lots of oil / diesel for heating systems.

Hopefully the price will be coming down some more over the coming weeks with crude down at $41-46 (WTI to Brent)
