Air Con Query for new owner

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Just found this website by doing a bit of a google search on an air con issue, hopefully some can give me a bit of info on what I should do.

I've just purchased an Octavia VRS 2011 petrol model that only has 15000 miles on the clock.  Everything about it is perfect and seems to be in great condition, I only just picked it up from an independent dealer last Friday and have done a bit of driving in it so far.  The only thing that is bugging me is a hissing noise coming when I switch on the AC.  As soon as I switch it on there is a hissing noise for ten seconds, then it goes away.  The hissing noise does come back now and again every few mins, especially if I slow down at lights or a junction for example.  The AC does seem to be working fine, it's got quite cold and seems to remain constant, however I'm not sure if it's as cold as the AC on the car I just traded in when getting this (Toyota Corolla).  I also think the hissing has died down a bit with each day (although that could be just my wishful thinking) but it's always there when first pressing the AC button.

Because I got this from an independent dealer I only have a 28 day warranty, therefore I've already spoke to them about bringing it in maybe later this week to be looked at.  I'm doing one big drive tomorrow to see family so will keep an eye on the AC again to see if the hissing continues.

Could this issue settle down do you think?  Or is this a common problem and should the warranty from the dealers cover any parts/labour for this (documents are upstairs and the missus is asleep so can't disturb her to rifle through the cupboard to find them).

switched mine on and suddenly vented all the gas through a pressure sensor in the metal part of the a/c pipe on the drivers side near the rad it was whistleing like a kettle might be worth checking its not leaking slightly lucky i bought a warranty !

This is where mine failed a couple of months back. On investigation at the garage we thought it was the 'stalk' that the sensor sits on had cracked where it joins in to the bigger part of the pipe. When I took the plug off the sensor though you could see remnants of green dye inside. So it must have failed internally.

Bit of an update.  I had a bit more of a look at the last service document (it's had 3 services at a main dealer), the last service had a couple of advisory notes - one which said it needed the air con filling up, so it must just be a regas I think.  Also, there's a couple of advisory notes about brakes needing to be looked at as it says something about brake discs being scorn (car has only done 15000 miles so hopefully nothing major) so I've got my own reliable garage to have a look in a couple of weeks.  My fault for not checking the service history in a more thorough manner, I mainly just checked that it had had main dealer service at regular intervals, which it has at 7000, 10000 and 13000 miles.  The rest of the car is fine though, at least I'm getting it sorted and can put my mind to rest.

Always good to know it has the history.

Welcome to the group by the way.......... I'm sure if there's anything you need, one of these very knowledgeable people will help you out.
