I've lost 5th gear...

Featured Replies

Hi all.

Spent some time in the rain tonight adding the solid 42 draft gear shift plate bushings and the solid gear linkage bushes as well.

Fairly easy if slightly awkward job.

Anyway after doing so I followed the gear linkage alignment thing for the o2j gearbox, and everything is smooth and positive. Except I can't get 5th.

Well that's an exaggeration - I *can* get 5th but not easily, it takes some faffing and I wouldn't want to be doing it at speed or under load. Similarly getting out of fifth once I've got it is not easy, and often it just pops straight into 4th instead of neutral.

1st through 4th and reverse all seem fine.

Now done the alignment thing x2 and no dice - it's slightly better but not as good as before I started this job. Any ideas? Or just keep redoing the alignment until it's right?

It's now cold, wet and dark and I need the car tomorrow am so have put it all back together for now and I'll have to love with it but obviously want it sorted...

Thinking about it I didn't mark the position of the cable thread against the black linkage ends before pulling it all apart - possible they are now clamped back on just a thread or two too much/little? Would that have enough of an impact?
