universal intercooler?

Featured Replies

hi, my turbo has blown and my intercooler is knackered. im getting a reconditioned turbo for £232, is that cheap? also could I mount a universal intercooler? or will that cause problems? any help will be greatly appreciated!

VERY cheap, worryingly so.

Universal intercooler will be of EXECRABLE quality and will lose power badly, you'd be better off with a decent secondhand standard intercooler.

/\ I agree, in full. A cheap universal intercooler is like installing a boost leak!

Someone posted intake temps of the eBay seat sport knock offs and was getting 75-80 degrees. The official seat sport, datkside, airtec ones record 25-35 degrees from what I've read.

An after sales intercooler may not couple-up with your existing pipe layout, with all it's little oil vapour's etc, floating about.

Suggest use all original replacement equipment.

Question: why/ how is your intercooler knackered ?

Thanks for your help. I had a little accident around my intercooler area and has caused the top of the connection to snap. I have managed to bodge it for now but I need one A.s.a.p. Any recommendations to what I should purchase will be greatly appreciated!

I recommend the darkside front mount and the hard pipe kit. Expensive but it's a excellent peice of kit.

Ok thanks. I've had look at their website. is this the one I should get?

Or there is another one on there that fits the asz engine, but not sure if will fit a fabia? Which one do you recommend?

Get the airtec one IMO better value for money anyway.

Can see me investing in one of these at some point. Seems the most competitive complete setup by a mile.

Given the choice though with my current setup the forge fmic would be great but it's a rip off and gone up in price as well compared to what it was 6 months ago!

None of them will fit without work and expense; the crash bar had to be cut away to allow pipework access or a SEAT Ibiza one used in its place.

There is very little point in fitting a much larger (though better) intercooler and longer pipework if you will be running an original KKK turbo.

Forge intercooler fits with no modfications, however it isn't the best for performance.

I've had pretty much every intercooler option now.

If I was starting again I'd just upgrade to a better SMIC with decent boost pipes and the cheaper pd170 hybrid turbo.

Will sit happy at 200'ish bhp and stay nice and reliable without spending much.

Thanks vindaloo. I think I will be going for the standard intrcooler. Appreciate all the advice everyone.

This is the right answer, just get a decent secondhand standard part, no mess, no fuss, job jobbed.

I know, think it will be the best option. The car has done 175k so no point in modding it up too much. Just need some new couplers as some have worn away! Bad times. Been working on it most the day! But thanks again!

Anyone know where I can get some new intercooler hoses to go with the standard intercooler? Preferably new ones. Thanks

Dealers or TPS if they will serve you.

Forge do an aftermarket set but are around £200 iirc

Forge told me the small front mount cooler was being discontinued, that was last year.

Ah that's a shame, it was great for amateur or DIY build
