Hatchback big enough?

Featured Replies

Hi there

I am looking at the new Superb as a replacement for a Mazda5.

According to spec's, the boot on the hatch isn't too far away from the estate.

A 1.4 SE DSG would be right at the top of my budget, with zero room for options. So I was considering the hatch to save some cash.

If you took the load cover away, would the boot be big enough for a medium sized dog? (Bit smaller than a lab).

I would be looking to keep the car for a long time, so I want to get this right.

Would I be better off with the Octavia Estate with a higher spec?

The hatch has quite a sloped rear window, the floor area is huge but obviously the head height is dramatically reduced, personally in your circumstances I would only be considering an estate

I'd probably go for a well spec'd MkII Octavia Estate - Elegance or L&K trim will get you all the bells and whistles you need for less and have more room for the dog.

+1.

Take your dog to the dealer, c/w it's own blanket of course & see if it's happy?

(Done similar exercise many years ago with wife, with her wheel-chair, &  electric scooter + the dog's bed Didn't take dog, Lhasa Apso's are quite small.....)

PS, We did run hatchbacks for another 5 years but then switched to estates, much easier to load / unload.

Thanks for the replies. Think I will check one out at a dealer.

Or go for the estate but with a manual gearbox. It will be roughly the same price as the hatch with the DSG.

I had considered that, but this purchase has to last at least 7-8 years, and I'd promised myself a car with an auto box and flappy paddles. Sound's daft but this is one area I don't want to comprise on.

Also depends on where you're purchasing. If it's not through a broker that could give you the extra discount to make the estate an option. I had my first look in a Superb today - they really are special and you may regret not getting one rather than compromising on spec or purchasing method.

Cheers

This is a VERY valid point.

Some brokers will sell you an SE L Executive Estate with a few options for the price you will pay for a std SE hatchback from a dealer

An estate is the obvious choice with a dog. If you are going to look at a hatch, bear in mind the rear shelf can slide down behind the rear seats so you don't need to physically remove it each time.

Also consider if you need both sides of the rear seat. If not, there's extra room for the dog but you must consider use of a dog safety belt for the safety of both the dog and passengers.

I was thinking of a dog guard between the back seats and the headliner - I see they do them for the mkii superb hatch. But yes, safety belt is better.

This is even taking into account current broker prices. I see there are quite a few brokers not doing any deals on the new superb yet (e.g. Broker4cars), so maybe in a couple of months when I come to do the deal there might be some that hit that 400-500 I need.

Have you tried coast2coast?

Have you tried coast2coast?

+1 they were offering 21% off a loaded L&K (this will drop to 19% on Tuesday 1st September)
