Help! EML light but no issues......

Featured Replies

Coming back home now the EML has popped on :-/

Stopped briefly but it's come back in now and stayed on

No loss of power

No loss of MPG

Any thoughts?

Also looking at getting a cheap code reader/clearer from eBay/amozon any thoughts on these?!?

Make sure your brake lights work - one fairly common issue is an "implausible signal" if the brake switch fails.

Mine did this and it was a voltage out of range at cranking because the battery is starting to go

Oh that's good then :)

New battery might help then?

Think it's the standard skoda one from brand new :-/

Don't spend £60 on a battery until you've checked the codes (and your brake lights!) first!

Bluetooth or wifi obd readers for a fiver on eBay and a smartphone app are a good bet, or there's a register on here of users who have the proper diagnostic kit (VCDS)

I am in York

Might just get one of them hand held scanners from Amazon for £30 might not do to same as vcd but will give me idea surely?

If you've got a smartphone then a £5 wifi or Bluetooth reader will do the same thing (and more actually!) as a £30 generic reader.

Android is preferably - torque app with a Bluetooth reader

I have a iPhone :-/

You need a wifi one then - which are closer to 8 quid than 5 :) various apps on the App Store read the codes.

What will the code say if it is the battery?

My code was "reference voltage out of range" - looked it up online and it was a 12V reference that was reading about 9V. The app lets me extract a snapshot of engine data at the time of the code so I could see the engine load and RPM which confirmed it was while cranking :)

Ive bought one recently but not had the need to use it yet, your more than welcome to try it,if you want a vcds scan then there is a member in York called Phil  (Phil-E) who has helped me out for a few ciders.

Any other ideas on what it could be

I am liking the battery idea lol nice and easy to fix ahhaha

Have you done any work/mods to your car recently? maybe a loose connection? pipe not refitted correctly? best to read the code(s) stored & go on from there to be honest.

There's no point speculating as there are probably hundreds of things I could be which wouldn't cause any noticeable symptoms. Brake switch is common but as are issues with inlet manifolds on some engines. Sub £10 to get a reader or take up the offer from someone on here for free

Won't the brake lights come up on the maxidot?

Just ordered a wifi obd thing and downloaded that app....

Won't the brake lights come up on the maxidot?

No as it's not the bulb that fails - its the switch for the pedal. The ECU realises that you're not likely to have driven 20 miles without using the brakes once so flags an "implausible input" error. Making sure the lights come on when you press the pedal is a quick way to confirm if the switch is working

I did not know that

I think the brake lights are working but they do seem to stay lit for longer when pedal released

The brake lights shouldn't be staying on for any length of time after the pedal is fully released.

This could suggest a 'sticking' switch.

Time to get the wife outside to sit in the car whilst you watch the brake lights, or find a window you can reverse up to.

Hahahaha yea sure she will help me

Gonna wait for my reader to come but it does seem the lights were staying on eve for about half a second more then they should of that makes any sense :-/

Really hoping it is a simple fix as I am meant to be going to Blackpool in car this weekend :-/
