Anyone tried upgrading the boot struts?

Featured Replies

I was thinking of a way to make the boot release automatic, in the sense of replacing the standard boot struts for something from another car that has a heavier boot? has this been done before? The way it would work (in theory), is that the increased pressure in the strut would cause the boot lid to rise due to the weight difference (the vrs boot being lighter) meaning from one pop of the key i could get an automatic boot :) !

Any ideas or advice? I'm convinced this is a possible thing to do! :)

You could perhaps achieve this using springs on the original struts? I've seen this done on a MK2 Fabia.

Been done a few time. Use superb struts, flip the brackets round 180 degrees and buy springs to help them push the boot up.

Probably go up to fast and rip the roof off :D

Nice idea :) which springs would I need? And how much are the superb ones?

Why not using an electric motor and an actuator to have a fully automatic boot lid ? :notme:

Because this in theory would work the same in one direction and be simpler and look more oem :) nice idea though

Pretty sure I've seen springs on EBAY.

It would be better this way, IMHO. An electronically/electrical system would be safer than a spring&strut setup. In case of a rear impact, the boot lid should stay closed even if the locking system has been damaged. This is the main reason why they aren't making them this way. Secondly, when trying to close the lid which has enforced springs&struts might be pretty tricky if the person isn't that tall or just doesn't have enough muscle.

Something like this would be pretty cool!

I see where your going with it. Is there legal statement behind the boot staying shut when in an accident then? Where would you mount the motor?

I am not so sure about EU law, but there might be some things, I've tried to google this subject but there's a lot of 'noise'. IMHO, you can place the motor in the empty space from the boot lid, as I've seen, there should be plenty.
