Mk2 Golf G60

Featured Replies

Hi all,

looking for some info and maybe experience of these cars. simple and easy i guess, you will either know or wont know. ;)

have any of you either driven, owned or been a passenger in a mk2 golf G60?

how fast do these things feel?

can you hear the supercharger when accelerating?

thanks all

Been a passenger in one, left hand drive wide arched thing. Very fast feeling, very nice, very hmmmmmmmm.......... I'd have one for a giggle if I had the space/money and they were right hand drive.

they're very fast, and yeah you can here the supercharger whine... just make sure it's running ok... new superchargers are about

theres one of 2 on the scottish VAG site

heres one i seen at a show the other week for sale too (i think)

ive had an 8v and been in a 16v. these are 160bhp standard i think. just wondering how fast they actually feel.

must be 7sec to 60 or under i would have thought

The Rallye was only available in LHD but is nice with it's syncro system (4 wheel drive).

The G60 Limited is a very rare car, only available in Germany I think.

I used to own a Corrado G60. In standard form it was quick-ish, but not blindingly quick. With a chip & smaller pulley it achieved 190bhp.

The G-Lader (supercharger) is a complex little thing & stuff can go wrong in a big way.

Rebuilds are esstential for smooth running. The whine is worth it though! I've never know a sound like it. Made a little whistle on the over-run as well.

Sometimes I miss it!

what is that intercooler/radiator for? is that ones with air con or something?

Yep.

All Golf G60s are LHD as standard. The only ones officially imported were Rallyes with the wide arch kit. The normal GTI G60 was I believe available by special order from VW but only a handful at best were brought officially into the country, mostly for tuners like GTI Engineering and VW press fleet. With the advent of the internet a few years ago and very very good exchange rates suddenly people caught onto these things and started importing them left, right and centre, along with the original BMW M3s, Delta Integrales etc etc plus all the wierd and wonderful Jap stuff we never got to see officially.

To drive, a G60 is quick but fairly slow revving, no quicker in a race to 60 than a standard 16v, plus it had the cable change gearbox and higher gearing than a normal GTI - but just like TDIs and 1.8Ts the whole thing comes alive when you chip it (plus a smaller pulley on the G-lader). The ickle G40 was a different kettle of fish though, much revvier, and although on paper slower, it was so much more fun in the little Polo chassis which could barely handle it at times! If you're not 6'3 then the Polo would be the more fun choice if you can still find a minter.

Be wary of any of these cars now though. Some came through respected importers and had a checked history - others weren't so lucky, and they are old now so don't expect them to be trouble free; don't view them with rose tinted spectacles.

A G60 is, in typical VAG fashion, not just a GTI 8v with a funny compressor bolted straight on - it has many differences that won't immediately be obvious, bonded in windscreen being a start, plus the gearbox and suspension are different (especially if it has 4WD!!) plus the brakes are bigger. One thing I will say about the G60 is the handling is far better than either the 8v or 16v out of the box, VAG got it dead right with that one (don't know about Rallyes though, never been in one, but they're very heavy), though with the age of the car and the likely hood of the type of ex-owner it will have had, it's unlikely the suspension will still be original or working properly.

If you want to buy one, tread very carefully, and be prepared for big bills if it's a daily driver.

That would have been the Rallye Golf then :) , G60 with arches and jetts style headlamps, a mate in germany had one of those, bloody quick to.

im basically looking for another mk2 but fancied a G60 and would get it made RHD. basically looking to keep if for a long time.

slightly been hit on the head as i was made redundant last week so just planning at the moment :(

Elton at Jabba has a G60 Rallye....LHD and 4WD.....now converted to run IHI turbo.

Didn't VW also do a limited edition G60 which didn't have the wide arches but still 4WD and LHD but more power? Think it had Wolfburgs badges by the indicators.

Jabba made their name doing chargers and still do a lot of them. Also do remapping for them.

i think there may have been a G60 16v too. there was a G60 syncro too

I used to go 'cruising' around nottingham on a Sunday night many moons ago. It is 3 lanes wide and goes in a circle seperated by traffic lights every 200 yards. Everyone used to race off the lights etc. Anyway there was this G60 that used to go down and god knows what he had done to it but it was insanely quick. Scooby classic eater from the lights !

I would have one as they sounds fantastic through a fat exhaust !

wasnt there a G60 Storm as well ? seent he Storm badge on a few G60's both Golf and Corrado.

Thought Storm was a limited edition of the Scirocco?

  • Author

yeah scirocco and corrado had storm editions never heard it being used with golfs. the G60 had ones like 'fire and ice' and 'edition 1' not sure of any others

Aye Storm was the Skyrocket and 'Rado's! If you fancy a RHD G60 Golf, just find a nice straight GTI, whip out motor and bolt in G60 lump from a C or a rallye etc, If you can find a bent G60 Corrado, then nick the brakes too :)

The G60 GTI is nice though as it Comes with ABS as std, bonded screen and a strengthened shell! Plus you get a cable change 'box so the Diff pins wont explode on you!!! Also come in beautiful colours such as Metallic Aubergine or Capri Green!

Rallye's are V.nice but very heavy due to BFO Bodykit and 4WD system, they really need chipping and pulleying to get the best from them, but they have fantastic grip and look the dogs doodahs! But don't bump one 'cos VW don't make any of the panels or bumpers etc for them anymore so they are a 'mare to fix :(

Why not go for a G60 Corrado, looks better than a golf and handles sooooo much better plus you get the cool spoiler that goes up automatically at 45mph :) But I am biased in that way don't you :)

The noise from the charger is worth having one alone...........

Beat me to it, Beeftech! Seem to remember yours is a Storm ;):D

I agree, G60 Corrado all the way. Much better handling and looks + you'll have a bit more choice than the Golf G60, and right hand drive too. Overtaking in a left hooker must be pretty nerve-wracking!
